It’s a common knowledge that the team leader of Matthew’s team will be retiring at some time during the next 18 months and Matthew is really interested to progress in the team leaders’ position. Matthew is determined to apply for the position and, if successful, to use it as a stepping-stone to further his career in the organisation.

As one of the longest-serving members in his section, Matthew has experienced no real difficulty on many occasions to act in the team leaders position when the team leader has been away on leave. Matthew has no doubts in his ability to do the job from a technical point of view. But he suspects that he needs to develop more solid working relationships with his current managers which he hopes one day soon will become his peers.

His first step to achieving his plan is to read up on the skills and techniques that forge effective working relationships. Matthew finds several books on these topics in his local bookshop and learns that effective working relationships are based on understanding oneself and others, and a collection of attitudes that underpin interpersonal skills and techniques. The information he learns from these books and puts into practice does seem to make it easier to get along with people, staff and management alike.
