DEFINITIONS

Reference – A source of information, used to enhance, give credence to, and back up the findings of an academic work (e.g.: assessment). It is “the use of a source of information in order to ascertain something”, “(to) provide (a book or article) with citations of sources of information” or to mention or citation of a source of information in a book or article (e.g.: ‘each chapter should have references to books covering the subject in greater depth’) (LEXICO, N.D.).
Reference Source – The source (person, place, thing) of a Reference. There are a myriad of reference sources, including (but not limited to):

• Newspapers and other print media (e.g.: journal articles, flyers, posters, etc)

Referencing – The act of researching a reference from a reference source in order to quote (cite) it in an academic work (e.g.: assessment, presentation). 

Reference Style; Referencing Style – “a set of rules on how to cite your sources in academic writing. Citation style guidelines are often published in an official handbook containing explanations, examples, and instructions” (Swaen, 2015). I.E.: The style (the way) in which the Academic work is referenced. There are many different academic referencing styles.

Some of the major, more used/popular styles include (but are by no means limited to):

• Harvard – The Harvard referencing style is a popular style using the author-date system for in-text citations. It consists mainly of the authors' last name and the year of publication (and page numbers if it is directly quoted) in round brackets placed within the text. It is primarily used by University Students.

• Chicago – often divided into Chicago A & Chicago B (sub-styles). An "author-date" style (i.e.: the citation in the text consists of the author(s) name and year of publication given wholly or partly in round brackets.

• Modern Language Association (MLA) – A referencing style most widely used for research papers in the humanities (the study of how people process and document the human experience; e.g.: philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language). 

The American Psychological Association (APA) – most commonly used in psychology (e.g.: Psychology, Counselling, Coaching, etc) and education.
