- b: Develop a plan to encourage self-management of emotions of the team when these triggers occur.
- Self Management Plan: The following will assist in improving the team’s emotional and behavioural issues.
- Have a Ringleader
- Before a manager can improve the emotional intelligence of their team, they need to work on improving their own emotional intelligence first. To do this, the manager needs to be focusing on their own self-awareness, emotional management, effective communication, social awareness and conflict resolution. On top of this, the manager need to have the respect from their team. To gain the teams respect, the manage needs to:
- Be polite and respectful
- Listen to their team
- Avoid excuses and own up to mistakes
- Be ready to help their team
- Determine team member strengths and weaknesses
- It is critical that a manager identifies the strengths and weaknesses of their team and consider their skills, talents and knowledge that will assist in achieving the overall goal. The manager needs to indicate to the team that they are more than the process when errors are made by the team.
- Spark Passion
- First of all, it is important that the manager recruits the right people to prevent energy in the workplace from drooping. Also the manager can spark passion through identifying and recognising the achievements and hard work of team members. A manager also needs to provide a flexible and engaging environment to work in (Mayer, Caruso, and Salovy 2016) and also ensure that business’s mission is actually what the team is working towards.
- Build Team Norms
- The manager needs to establish rules and team norms that are connected to the values. The team will be more willing to back the rules and guidelines if they support both the team and the business.
- Develop ways to manage stress
- Stress can caused your staff to become burnt out, as well as have a negative impact on their health. Because of this, it is important that your staff are able to handle deadlines and grievances in a healthy way.
- To minimuse the stress of employees, the below tactics can be implemented:
- Sticking to schedules
- Being empathetic
- Encourage the team to disconnect from work and take a break.
- Do not encourage multi-tasking
- Resolving conflicts
- Allow the team to have a voice
- Possessing fantastic communication skills is crucial. A manager is able to assist their team to improve communication skills by working with them to develop active listening, help them gain a more thorough understanding of body language and by providing them with a method to vent their frustrations and concerns. Then use their feedback and thoughts in a constructive manner as to solve a problem by working out the best way to handle the situation. The team should also be given the chance to share their ideas. Be sure also to ask your quiet or shy team members what they think too. (Brent Gleeson, 2013)
- c: Recommend two ways a manager can encourage others to develop their own emotional intelligence
- Ways a manager can encourage others to develop their emotional intelligence.
- There are several recommended ways in which the manager can encourage others to develop their own emotional intelligence. This can be done by:
- Introduce the concept of emotional intelligence to the staff. Talk about it’s importance and role for better performance at work, conflict management, and individual harmony. Educate your team on what it is, how if differs for each person, have the team members think about their strengths and weaknesses and how they can improve themselves. Get employees to test their EQ, and suggest books or articles on the topic for them to study.
- Encourage Social Responsibility – it is the job of the manager to encourage employees to further grow their emotional intelligence. One of the highest levels of emotional experience is social responsibility which is abot what we can contribute to others. Millennials want to be fulfilled at work and to do something meaningful and work to them is about more than just bringing income in. Managers can encourage employees to donate to charities, volunteer, and contribute to good causes by contacting organisations and asking how best to help. (vos, 2017)
- The purpose of the meeting is to incorporate your responses from Part 2, tasks 2 b and c into your communication plan. Your communication plan will be used to implement the exchange ideas and identify situations where emotional intelligence techniques (based on theories of emotional intelligence) could be used in your workplace, situation or previous employment for the development of emotional intelligence.
- In your meeting:
- Acknowledge the participants
- Lead a discussion on emotional intelligence techniques and their use
- Use appropriate language and nonverbal features to communicate and facilitate the discussion
- Use listening and questioning skills to elicit discussion about the techniques to clarify and confirm understanding
- Create opportunities for the participants to express their thoughts and feelings
- Adapt your personal communication style to build trust and positive working relationships
- Assess and respond and adapt to the emotional cues of your colleagues or class members
- Seek additional feedback to assist others in understanding the impact of their behaviours and emotions on others in the workplace
- Successfully communicated the development and implementation of the communication plan incorporating the responses from Task 2 b and c.
- You will be required to upload a video recording of this meeting. Use the Video Upload Instructions (Appendix 3) to assist you with this process.
- Your assessor will review your video recording and record their feedback on the Assessor Observation Checklist. You must also submit a copy of any documents used during your meeting.
