For this assessment you are required to provide undertake a review of the processes in place to establish and support effective workplace relations at:

Part A: Communications planning research
Review and study the case study scenario above, particularly the background to John Readings (the simulated organisation) including strategic and operational plans, current change issues, communication and consultation needs, and information about your role as a Communications and Relationship Consultant and gather the information needed for you to successfully build and manage workplace relationships at the company.
You will need to access the company information including strategic/operational plans, policies and procedures and so on that can be found here. In preparation for your new role with the company, research and complete each of the tasks below.
- Put together a brief description of the company and its vision for moving forward.
- Provide an outline of the organisational culture and business ethics that are important to consider in your role as Communications and Relationship Management consultant.
- Describe how the current company systems, policies, and procedures support and/or impede the development of effective work relationships. Consider here interpersonal styles, communications, consultation, cultural sensitivity, social sensitivity, networking and conflict resolution.
- Provide a brief overview of why strong work relationships are important to the company.
- From the research you have done, outline the networking the company currently undertakes and what, if any policies/procedures guide this activity and consider what networking would be beneficial and explain why.
- Identify a variety of ways (at least 4) in which workplace systems, policies and procedures can assist in building effective workplace relationships.
- List five different ways the company may choose to consult with employees.
- Describe what the current procedure is for each of the following at John Readings (provide a brief description and/or note the title or provide a screenshot of the document where it is found) and, where appropriate, make suggestions as to how you might improve them (or develop processes for where they are missing):
- Consultation and collaboration with employees
- Conflict management
- Task issue management.
- What types of formal processes might you need to include to manage escalated issues?
- What legislation does the company procedure on managing conflict refer to? If this is missing from the company document, then make a list of any/all legislation that may apply to a conflict management process.
- How does the company procedure describe the process for communicating the outcomes of conflict with employees? Is this adequate? If not, what is missing?
- Explain the requirements under Fair Work Act Modern Awards to consult with employees, including the circumstances in which consultation is required.
- List 3 methods you could use to gather feedback on the effectiveness of the mgt of workplace relationships from relevant stakeholders
Part B: Leadership
Create a Word document titled Leadership Self-Assessment. Provide written answers to the following questions based on your leadership style. Download and complete the Leadership Inventory located here. (Note: You must include the completed inventory with your assessment submission.)
Then answer the following questions (based on the results on the leadership Inventory and your previous experience):
- Summarise your leadership style. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- How will you meet the needs of your audience at John Readings?
- What interpersonal skills will you need to deploy to win support for your ideas?
- How will you gain endorsement and approval from your stakeholders?
- How will you facilitate feedback to employees on outcomes of the consultation/collaboration process?
- What methods or communication modes do you think would most assist the organisation to build relationships?
Part C: Presentation to the employees
The internal management review found (amongst others) that there was ineffective or no use of modern communication technologies and social platforms. Interestingly though, in your initial walk arounds, you observed staff across all departments using social media (usually via their hand-held devices!) So, in your role as Communications and Workplace Relationships Consultant, you have decided to use social media to introduce yourself, your

Part A: Case study scenarios
- For each of these scenarios, suggest how you would collaborate and support each team to complete their work tasks. What would you change and how would you build strong work relationships?
- Who would you delegate to take responsibility for each of these scenarios? Explain why.
- Draft a separate email to each of your line managers and the senior manager responsible for logistics, outlining the problem you think each team has and proposing a way to solve these problems. You need to make sure you outline your proposal clearly and with respect to the role of these managers you must give each manager an opportunity to provide feedback.
Part B: John Readings complaint
- Describe at least two pieces of John Readings’ policy or procedure that conflict with the team’s behaviour towards the employee.
- Identify one piece of relevant legislation that has informed the JR policies and reinforced the company’s commitment to becoming an industry leader in cultural diversity and ethical values.
- Describe how policies and processes can help to promote cultural diversity, ethical values and relationship-building.
- Describe any changes or additions you would make to company policies or processes, including future communications intended to implement and raise awareness of these documents.
- Explain how you intend to approach the team to resolve this issue fairly and how that will be consistent with organisational policy and the desire to further promote cultural

- Based on the meeting you conducted with the team (above), you have determined he need for a new ethics and diversity procedure to be developed and implemented. Create a draft Diversity and Ethical Practices Policy/Procedure which includes the:
- Purpose
- Relevant legislations, regulations, codes and standards
- Procedure to be followed to ensure cultural diversity and ethical standards are maintained
- Consultation process for promptly dealing with cultural or ethical issues which are raised
- Detail the key responsibilities by management and teams to ensure that the procedure is implemented and followed. (Create a list of key tasks for management and teams).
- Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to assist you to highlight the key points you want to get across to your audience. (Remember, your role is to implement the new diversity and ethical practices procedure by gaining the support and trust of all company employees – management and staff and seek their input/feedback).
- Now that you know what you want and/or need to cover, the next step is to decide the format you will use on social media. You have decided that you will develop a short video and provide the remainder of the information in other formats. Making videos for social media can be quite different from other video formats. - Next step is to make your video recording. In your video you will need to remind staff of the recent meeting held where the issues with diversity and discrimination wereraised and, what you have actioned since that meeting (i.e., developed a draft of a new diversity and ethical practices procedure for their review)
- Demonstrate that the company (through you) has listened to their concerns and acted upon them
- Briefly outline & highlight the main points of the procedure, how it has changed and how it will help to ensure that the company proactively embraces diversity
- Highlight the benefits of a well written and stakeholder endorsed procedure that will ultimately improve workplace relationships for everyone (i.e., workers and managers – remember that managers are risk adverse and don’t like change!)
- Engage with the audience and encourage feedback in an open and honest manner
- Build trust with all stakeholders (employees and managers), demonstrate inclusive leadership and dissipate any fear (particularly from managers) of changes.
- Now, decide on any supporting information you need to post online:
- Develop at least one supporting doc (e.g., flyer, poster, information picture etc.)
- Explain why you decided to use this format and who you think will benefit most from it.
- Confirm the issue to be discussed
- Provide an overview of the new procedure, why you have developed it and how it will be beneficial for all
- Explain how you will provide guidance and support to assist any stakeholder who has a work difficulty or issue. Provide an example of how you have achieved this in your role previously
- Outline the importance of adjusting personal communication styles to meet the cultural diversity and ethical environment within the workplace and provide some examples
- Ask the team for their input and ideas on how to improve current practices to ensure workplace relationships are effective.
Summary of Assessment Requirements
The unit BSBLDR523 – Lead and Manage Effective Workplace Relationships requires students to demonstrate their ability to establish, manage, and review workplace relationship processes. The assessment is divided into three major tasks:

Assessment Task 2 – Manage Effective Workplace Relationships
Part A: Respond to workplace case study scenarios by suggesting collaboration methods, delegation, and drafting manager emails.
Part B: Analyse John Readings’ complaint, linking to company policies, cultural diversity, legislation, and ethical practices.
Draft a Diversity and Ethical Practices Policy/Procedure including purpose, legislation, procedures, consultation, and roles.
Create a PowerPoint presentation, social media plan & video, and supporting documents to communicate the procedure.
Draft emails to CEO and staff.
Prepare a final review report on communication and interpersonal relationships in the workplace.
