Case Study
The owner of ABC Health and Leisure Services is aware that you have just completed your studies in this unit: Manage People Performance. Although he has never worked in HR, he is aware of the need to be more compliant when recruiting, selecting, and managing people. He has requested a report to respond to the situation below and strategies to improve current practices. Prepare a report for him. In it, include recommendations and explain how these could be implemented immediately. When referring to risk, identify any non-compliance issues and potential costs.
ABC Health and Leisure Services provides a range of fitness and health products and services to gyms across the state of Queensland. They have engaged some qualified and unqualified trainers, but all are lovely people!
There are no protocols for engaging with current customers. Instead, the organisation relies on long-term employees, their personalities and their relationships “to serve customers the best way they can”.
Access to the organisation’s database is open to all employees, at the moment.
The majority of customers are men who regularly share jokes aloud, which seems to upset some of the other customers, but that’s the climate that works! The organisation has always worked that way.
A couple of complaints have been received, usually from older customers, about inappropriate conduct of some trainers who are generally perceived to be working physically too close to their younger customers. It appears that any situation is left to the Trainer to decide what is acceptable. Complaints are not currently recorded; employees manage the situation as they see fit.
Some trainers do not know how some of the equipment is to be correctly used, and often ask their colleagues if they are not sure – during training sessions with customers. This is not identified as professional by some customers.

few good trainers have left, with comments about the unprofessional approach and management of the system, but the attitude generally is, “In this industry, there is always turnover.”
There have been several formal complaints about inaccuracy of salaries and payments for staff and the “quick removal” of some staff without any notice. Rumour has it that a complaint has gone to Fair Work Australia, so you have been advised that there may be an audit. The owner has asked you to identify the types of documents and resources that they had better get ready as he said, “I just want to get them off our backs!”
