Highlights
Task 1
1. Name three (3) people you consider as leaders. Select leaders from different work or professional contexts to demonstrate your broader understanding of leadership contexts and types. In a short discussion consider the following questions:
• What is it that makes each person a leader, and to whom do they provide leadership?
• How would you define each person’s leadership style? (Make sure your response refers to least one (1) of the models of leadership identified in your course materials)
• What skills, qualities, attributes or behaviours does each person demonstrate?
2. Using your practice, prepare a communication to staff about the practice’s corporate statements – Vision, Mission and Values. For your communication, use a format that would be suitable for your particular practice, for example a PowerPoint, newsletter, report, or brochure.
In your communication, explain the following using language appropriate to your practice and that is also designed to build a positive work environment:
1. The practice’s corporate statements – vision, mission and values.
2. How the practice’s corporate statements link to the responsibilities of individual roles or teams within the practice.
3. Outline what expectations of behaviour and performance from both individuals and teams within the practice are held in relation to achieving the corporate statements.
4. Provide details of the responsibility and actions the leaders within the practice will take to create and maintain a positive work environment.
Once you have completed your communication, review and consider the communication and then provide a brief explanation of:
5. Why the chosen format is appropriate for the individuals and team within your practice.
6. What changes would be required to make sure the practice would be positively represented if the communication were to be released to the media and the community.
3. For this question, base your responses on your current practice work environment, or on an organisation you are familiar with.
Assume a staff member in your practice has behaved in a manner that is contrary to the practice’s corporate statements. The owners of the practice are concerned about the potential harm to the practice’s reputation if the situation is not managed, and wish to ensure that this does not happen again. You have been asked to investigate and report on this situation to the practice owners.
1. Select a potential situation relating to the practice’s corporate statements for an area of the practice you are familiar with. Give an outline of the nature of the situation in sufficient detail to put your responses in context.
2. Identify and describe the risks that might be associated with this situation, both in terms of internal operations, and the practice’s interaction with its community and patient/client base.
3. Identify and describe any relevant legislation (eg Antidiscrimination) or codes (eg Practice code of conduct) that may have been breached as a result of this situation.
4. Present a plan for team building and improvement that is intended to prevent such situations. Incorporate all of the following details:
o How you will use positive role modelling to build trust, confidence and respect within the practice.
o How a positive work environment can be built and maintained using leadership skills and approaches.
o How teams will be encouraged to explore and take innovative approaches to work performance, including the use of new technologies.
o How consultation (internal and external) will be built into the decision-making processes for teams.
o The steps or processes the leader may role model or implement to ensure decisions are made in a timely manner and in accordance with risk management plans.
5. Provide details for two (2) different work teams explaining how the team building will be aligned to the team roles, including details of:
o The primary roles within each team.
o How accountabilities and delegation will be allocated to these roles to ensure effective operations and empowering of the teams.
o The resources each team will require to allow them to embrace change and to ensure they are able to meet their work objectives.
Task 2
Leadership Action Plan
It is said that to practise leadership effectively you must not only understand your own strengths and limitations, but also how and where you may improve. This process involves a great degree of reflection and honesty. It also involves interaction with other people, for example your coach, mentor or work colleagues, to listen and find out what these people can tell you about yourself. The process requires an openness to learn and a capacity to change your paradigm, a welcoming of new experiences, and then reflection on these experiences.
In the light of all the information that you have been exposed to (including behavioural inventories such as DiSC, PSI, SWOT analysis, ISPI, EQ questionnaires and the like), this Task requires you to review and reflect on your own leadership practices and processes to determine what is most relevant to you – that is, your own Leadership Action Plan.
There are two parts to this Task:
• Part A is a series of questions/requests that may serve as a useful basis to assist in this self-evaluation process.
• Part B is your Leadership Action Plan.
Part A: Know yourself
• Briefly identify and summarise your key strengths as a leader.
• Briefly identify and summarise the key areas where you would like to improve.
• Outline your general approach to improving your leadership skills. (A detailed approach will be developed in Part B of this task)
• Identify the main problems you have to deal with as a leader. These difficulties could include communication issues with team members, practice power politics, team motivation, or your own leadership limitations.
• Choose at least three (3) tools, models or techniques covered in this module and describe how you could use them (for example emotional intelligence, DiSC etc).
Part B: Leadership action plan
This is where you formulate the details of what you are going to do to be a more effective leader.
• You are required to develop at least five (5) leadership strategies – for example: ’communicate a clear vision’.
• For each of the five strategies, indicate when you plan to begin and its overall timeframe
• For each of the five strategies, describe the required behaviour – for example: ‘development of regular vision implementation/alignment meetings and a greater openness on my part’.
• For each behaviour, detail the physical activity needed to achieve this behaviour (that is, how you intend to undertake the development of a particular characteristic) – for example: ‘printing and distributing my team’s vision statement’.
• List the networks and/or professional development that will be required to develop the relevant leadership skills.
• Detail the resources you may need – for example, training, practical support, allocated time with your mentor or coach.
