ASSESSMENT 1 – CASE STUDY

Student Instructions

You are required to demonstrate your ability to analyse and research an existing business’ vision, mission, strategic, business and operational plans, (including its core values, objectives, goals, competitors, financial targets, management arrangements, and marketing approaches), and respond to actual performance against the planned objectives.

 For this assessment you may choose to use a business model-

The organisation where you currently work or another organisation that you are familiar with, provided in either case that you have access to, and permission from the organisation to use, the necessary information and data.

*At a minimum, you will need to have access to the following information for the organisation –

➢ Vision and Mission Statements

➢ Statement of core values

➢ Strategic Plan or current business strategies

➢ Business and Operational Plan

➢ Marketing strategy

➢ Human Resource strategy

➢ Recent actual performance data

This assessment is to be undertaken in two parts by completing twelve steps, which should be undertaken consecutively as far as practical.

You need to read the whole of the assessment before you start, as you need to be aware of the evidence that will be required to demonstrate that you have completed all parts.

PART A- analyse and research the key elements of existing business plans

1. Review and analyse the business’ current strategies, business plans and financial targets and prepare a summary of the interdependencies between them and the vision, mission, core values and business goals.
2. Research and analyse the business’ competitors and assess whether they have been given appropriate considerations in the current business plan and marketing approaches.
3. Review the human resource strategies and management arrangements and assess whether they are adequate to support the current vision, mission, core values and business plan
4. Undertake a SWOT analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current business plan.
5. Review current performance measurement systems to identify if any refinements should be considered as a result of the SWOT analysis

PART B – monitor and respond to performance against objectives

6. Locate what performance data is available to be able to monitor actual performance against objectives and KPI’s. (Note that you will need to have access to at least two years of data with actual performance results to analyse against the KPI's).
7. Check the actual data for accuracy and make any corrections if required (Note: do not assume there are no errors in the data).
8. Analyses the data and summarise actual performance against the planned objectives and KPI’s
9. Review the KPI’s being used and determine if, based on actual performance, any refinements to the KPI’s in use should be considered.
10. Consider also if new KPI’s or processes are required to ensure that system failures, product failures and variances to the business plan are reported as they occur.
11. Develop a strategy to ensure staff contributing to underperformance are provided with coaching and / or training where necessary
12. Develop a strategy to ensure ongoing review and continuous improvements to system processes and work methods.
