Assessment Task 2 – Role Play / Case study
Context
Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) intends to become a peak provider of Water Well constructions and restoration services in Victoria. UWD's overall strategy will be based on a continuing improvement process of setting objectives, measuring results, eliminating damages and risks and providing feedback to facilitate further growth and progress. The company have been involved in medium scale water well drilling for seven years and are now branching out to medium size dam building.
You will be taking on the role of a risk consultant in the area of excavation. Your position involves identifying and analyse the risks, developing existing risk management strategies and risk control, liaising with teams to support excavation risk identification and management, considering client and organisational viewpoints, and performing risk assessments on this project
For more information regarding Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD), please see the appendices A - D.
Part 1 (Role Play)
In this task you are expected to conduct a meeting with the site supervisor (your trainer) to determine risk objectives, project risk context, and classify the risk you have identified.
Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) is beginning a new water well construction work, and the work team have been asked by the client to use a new material for the well. The new concrete requires deep excavation, and produces airborne contamination. Recently a company in Perth has been harshly criticised in social media for using the concrete. Moreover, non-governmental organisations such as environment watchdog recently issued a statement that warns companies to put in place risk strategy if using the same material because in order to prevent the contamination the concrete slab has to be placed in the excavation. Nevertheless, there is no government legislation that bans the concrete from being used in construction and building projects. (Additional information about the project is included in Appendix A)
As risk consultant you are required to meet with the site supervisor ( a role to be played by your trainer). In your role you will focus on the excavation part of the project. You are required to have a risk mitigation strategy by meeting with the site supervisor (to be played by your assessor). The meeting is to assess the potential risks associated with excavation in the new construction work. In all sections you must identify at least 3 risks.
Your assessor will be looking for:
a) assessment of the potential risks of the project and establish project risk context ( Knowledge of the risk context, including relevant legislation and regulations. Determine risk objectives and standards, with input from stakeholders ).
b) knowledge of the relevant legislation and regulations
(Ability to classify risks according to likelihood and severity, assign identified project risks within agreed
risk categories such as risk registoror or risk matrix)
c) Risk classification and category to the identified risks, use the template provided to you in attachment
Once you finish your role play with your supervisor (role to be played by your trainer) please submit a report of your findings
Note in separate paper the negotiations you made with the supervisor as you will need them in your assessment 3.
Appendices A
Appendix A – Project information Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) has taken on a new client, Rural Support NGO (RSN). Rural Support NGO has
sponsored the fund to solve the water supply construction in the rural area.
Rural Support NGO (RSN) has contracted Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) to build the Well in Northcote, which
originally costs $3.5 million excluding land which it has already purchased. As the allocated land for the well
should be done in mantle rock and backfill of the old tunnel tube large part of the excavation for the new well is
complex. For this reason, Rural Support NGO (RSN) has decided that it would like to use a recently engineered
Dangola Dynamite that allegedly produces air pollution.
Dangola Dynamite has only begun being used worldwide within the past six months. Its major advantage is that it
is 50% cheaper than the other materials. Only one Perth supply company stock the product. Rural Support NGO
(RSN) time limit for the water well is only 8 -11 months or 38 -51 weeks.
Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) has accepted the contract because the management team believe that the project
would reduce the cost of production by 50% by using Dangola Dynamite. If the allegations of DD are not proved
the material will introduce a new dimension in the Well Construction.
Project Objectives:
To complete the build on time: 38-51 weeks
To source the new material and prove it is not risk to the construction industry
To appropriately utilise the material, with as little damage as possible
Complete the project with zero risk
To stay within budget: $3.5 million
Recommended actions for grades of risk
Grade Risk mitigation actions
A Mitigation actions, to reduce the likelihood and seriousness, to be identified and implemented
as soon as the project commences as a priority.
B Mitigation actions, to reduce the likelihood and seriousness, to be identified and appropriate
actions implemented during project execution.
C Mitigation actions, to reduce the likelihood and seriousness, to be identified and costed for
possible action if funds permit.
D To be noted - no action is needed unless grading increases over time.
N To be noted - no action is needed unless grading increases over time.
Part 2: Create a risk plan. (Minimum 800 Maximum of 1200 words)
Create a risk management plan for the position of the Excavator in Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) . This document will be used by management and the work teams to monitor and control risks associated with the excavators, hence you will need to use language that is appropriate for the industries audience.
As the document will be used as a reference, you will need to ensure that it is compliant with relevant legislation.
It must include:
a) Analysis of the risks identified in task 1 and completed risk register, with a minimum of 5 risks (refer to template in appendix D) b) A job safety analysis (refer to appendix C for a template) c) Risk management and treatment plan that should address points a) and b) d) Methods to review regularly the risk and introduce a mechanism that encourages feedback. Your explanation as to how people can submit feedback on the document
In this task you are required to demonstrate your risk analysis skills and templates, document clearly identified risk such as risk registrar or job risk analysis show your plan to regular risk review
Part 3: Consult with the client (800 words).
In this assessment you are required to write a report (800 words) about your finding in assessment 1 and 2. You are required to meet with your client, Rural Support NGO (RSN) to give your first briefing on the risks associated with their project. In this meeting you are required to consult with the client on risk treatments, and allow the client to participate in deciding the importance of the risks.
Your assessor will be looking for:
a) Customer service and interpersonal skills

d) discuss timeframes for the next review of risk processes
Part 4: Monitor and control new risks by updating risk plan. (Minimum 800 words Maximum of 1000 words)
As outlined in previous parts of your assessment the main material for the construction is Dongola Concrete. The only company which supplies Dongola is Changu PLC. The supplier was also previous suppliers to Urunduru Well Drilling (UWD) and offers competitive pricing. However, the two companies severed their partnership last year on bad terms. Urunduru Well Changu PLC Supplies frequently made late deliveries without notice or compensation. Unfortunately, you did receive this information after you completed the risk analysis. Your customer has asked you to include this new risk into your report.
Considering this information, you must modify the plan to include:
a) Identify new/additional risks
b) Arrangement of risk priority in relation to already established risks
c) Initiate two risk treatment/approaches for the newly identified risk
d) What is your advice to the management in regard to who should manage the new and likely risk of supply shortage
