This assessment will enable your assessor to make a judgement of competency based on the submission of your completed assignments against the requirements of this unit of competency. This document contains an ‘exam’ component (including multiple choice, multiple select and matching questions) as well as a scenario component which involves completing a variety of activities in the context of a simulated workplace environment.
This assessment is conducted under open-book conditions. Students can use study guides (search engines, unit e-books) to assist in answering questions.
Assessment of this program of study is based on competency-based principles. Students who fail to perform satisfactorily for the assessment on the prescribed date may be assessed as ‘not satisfactory’. You are required to be assessed as ‘Satisfactory’ (S) on completion of assessments assigned by your assessor for this unit of competency.
Any re-assessment is conducted as soon as practicable after you have been informed of the requirement to be re-assessed and have been given the opportunity to be re-trained and assimilate the training. You are re-assessed in only the areas assessed NS. It is at the assessor/s discretion to re-assess the entire assessment should it be demonstrated an overall understanding of this unit has not been achieved. You are only given ONE attempt at re-assessment. Students who are assessed ‘satisfactory’ after re-assessment of areas deemed NS will achieve competency for this assignment.

You are Hugh Brown, and you work for the CA City Café as the manufacturing manager for the range of condiments made by the café to be sold wholesale to other customers.
Your manager, Matt Hodgson, knows business is going well and wants to expand production. To do this, he needs the support (financial and human resources) of the executive of CA City Retail Group (CCRG).
Matt needs a report to present to the CCRG Board which demonstrates innovation and the strength of the project for the Café and the organisation as a whole. The report is to provide information to help persuade and influence the decision to increase support for this project. He stresses the need to communicate with the executive management team so they consider the recommendations you make.
The following points are critical:
A professional report needs to be produced based on the organisational visual style guide and supporting information.
Matt has asked you to report to himself and Kurt Washington (accountant) while creating the report.
The report will relate to the expansion of the range of CA Edibles. Matt wants to present the report to the board about the future of CA Edibles with supporting documents and data to demonstrate the viability of the project. The whole executive...
Management of CCRG will be in the audience. Matt wants to present key points to the board and email a copy of the report to all members.
Contact details:
Matt Hodgson email: matthodgson@cacitycafe.com.au
Kurt Washington: kurtwashington@cacitycafe.com.au
The report will have the following sections.
Opening summary (information to come from Matt Hodgson)
Information that is essential to promote the positive outcomes.
Objectives of the project
Why this is important to the café and CCRG:
Background information about the Café
The product (include branding information)
Our partnerships (include a table for this section)
Customers
Benefits and inputs required (information to come from Matt Hodgson)
Financial documentation and predictions (information to come from Kurt Washington)
Who is who in the project?
Progress report – how are we going?
Matt will provide content to be included in the opening summary and benefits/inputs required, and Kurt Washington will provide the information for the financial section. This data and information may not be ready until close to the time of presentation. Leave a place for this information to be added before presentation to the board.
Matt has let you know you need to do the following :
Include a cover page to be based on exemplar documents in the style guide
Make sure the document can be navigated easily (both contents and figures)
Use of tables to demonstrate financial and other data as required (when the data is provided)
Use of images (including logos)
The document needs to be in full sentences and all punctuation and spelling checked.
CA City Retail Group (and as a result the Café) have strict information pertaining to the style guide for the organisation. A copy of this document is included in the BSBTEC401 document folder (same place as you downloaded this document).

Question 1
a) You now need to design your document structure and purpose. Create the main parts of the report (e.g. the skeleton). Consider your audience, purpose, and requirements of the task. Make sure to give the report a title.
Save this document as ‘Last Name First Initial_TEC401_Report_v0.1’ and upload this to your ‘assignments’ section on your student portal. This ‘draft’ will form part of your assessment.
Hint: Your document at this stage is simply a series of headings and a table of contents that helps determine the structure and make sure it meets the purpose of the report.
b) How does your design document structure and layout suit your audience and purpose?
| Click or tap here to enter text. |
c) Does your document address the information requirements of the task?
| Click or tap here to enter text. |
Matt has provided you with the content of the report (less the opening summary, conclusion, and Kurt’s financial information). Remember you will need to leave a place for the information from Matt and Kurt (leave a heading and not a space or series of blank...).
a) You are now ready to complete your document. Complete the table below by explaining how you will address each feature when creating your report and its style layout.

a) You are to insert page numbers at the bottom right corner of each page using the ‘page number/footer’ function of Microsoft Word. Note these page numbers must be in the correct order.
b) You are to insert a header that reads ‘Expansion of CA Edibles report’ . This is to be on every page except the first page .
c) You are to insert a page break (using the appropriate function) before the conclusion section (as some content is still to come from Matt) to ensure this section begins on a new page.
Ensure you use all the following complex software functions in your completed document:
Proper alignment
Fonts (size and colour)
Document styles
Table of contents
Appropriate line spacing
Appropriate image placement and text wrapping
Your assessor will be looking for each of these and how they helped you with efficient document design and manipulation of data.
a) You have been asked to add a footnote to the report to increase the credibility of the content. Find how to do this using the ‘help’ function in Microsoft Word.
In the space below, explain in your own words how to insert footnotes based on the information you found.
Click or tap here to enter text.
b) Matt has instructed that he wants the footnote to be inserted in the ‘the product’ section of the report, specifically at the end of the following text:
Product available in 500 gm jars and catering packs of 2kg. There is potential for future retail sales. Before making our own Chutney, we paid $23.15 wholesale for 2 kg, the café uses 9 of these in a month for our various dishes. This is a saving for the café.
The footnote should be titled ‘CA City 20XX Financial Report’
Kurt Washington has provided the following information. You are to use this data to answer the questions for this task.
Financial information from Kurt Washington
The financial assessment of the project is based on the following areas already conducted as a preliminary trial. We have analysed our:
Wholesale customers
Café for internal use
Retail sales through the café for customers of the café: recommended retail price (RRP) for 500 gm jars is $24.95. Introducing a bulk pack for use in the café and catering 2kg cost $132.90. Wholesale price $191.85, RRP $425.75.
The below images demonstrate figures for each area of the business:
A1 – Cash flow forecast (to be created as a table)
(Table shown in the image with monthly figures)
Headings to input line. Secondary headings:
Opening cash balance
Add cash receipts
Fewer cash payments

Question 1
Open your document named ‘Last Name First Initial_TEC401_Report_v0.2’ to add the financial data given.
Create table one with the information given to you by Kurt Washington ( add in the above document ).
You are now required to add a table of figures (underneath the table of contents).
You need to format all rows and columns to meet with requirements for the task. See your style guide for specifications for borders, shading etc.
Insert the CA Café logo into table one as specified. Create borders to finalise the table. Save this document as ‘Last Name First Initial_TEC401_Report_v0.3’ and make sure it is uploaded to the ‘assignments’ section. There should now be a total of 3 versions of the report that are uploaded (v0.1, v0.2, v0.3).
You now need to finalise the document by formatting, previewing, adjusting, and printing as per the organisational and task requirements (including conservation and ergonomic requirements). Answer the following questions.

Your job involves many other activities. You need to manage your work to get this task done in time.
Matt has asked you to follow all task requirements for the café.
Complete the table below by explaining each process according to organisational tasks. Highlight why each process is important, ensuring you provide an example for each process.
The BSBTEC401 – Design and Produce Complex Text Documents assessment required students to demonstrate competency in creating professional workplace documents using advanced functions of word processing software. The tasks were divided into multiple components:
Exam Component – Multiple choice, matching, and short-answer questions to test knowledge of organisational requirements, style guides, ergonomics, conservation, and document design.
Scenario Component – Students were to act as Hugh Brown, the manufacturing manager at CA City Café, tasked with preparing a professional report for the CCRG Board regarding the expansion of CA Edibles.
Document Development – Stepwise creation of the report across different versions (v0.1, v0.2, v0.3), integrating structure, content, formatting, tables, charts, logos, and financial data.
Organisational and Style Guide Compliance – Ensuring the report followed CA City Café’s style guide, used professional formatting, tables, images, and correct saving protocols.
Finalisation and Submission – Previewing, adjusting, printing, and saving as per conservation and ergonomic requirements, ensuring accuracy and readiness for board presentation.
Key pointers included:
Cover page, table of contents, and structured report layout.
Inclusion of project objectives, product details, partnerships, customers, and financial documentation.
Professional formatting with page numbers, headers, footnotes, tables, and figures.
Use of software functions for readability, navigation, and appearance.
Adherence to organisational policies on privacy, conservation, and ergonomics.
The academic mentor approached the assessment by breaking down the complex requirements into manageable stages, guiding the student at each point:
The mentor first reviewed the scenario and clarified the role of the student (as Hugh Brown). Together, they identified the purpose (to persuade CCRG executives) and audience (board members and senior management). The mentor stressed that every section of the report must align with organisational standards and serve the persuasive purpose.
Before drafting, the mentor walked the student through workplace policies: ergonomics, conservation, and style guide adherence. The student created a table of organisational requirements and matched them with practical practices (e.g., taking breaks, minimising printing, saving files using correct protocols).
The mentor guided the student in preparing a skeleton draft with:
Title page and placeholder for cover design.
Table of contents.
Report sections (introduction, objectives, partnerships, financials, progress, conclusion).
This stage focused on document navigation, ensuring the layout met audience expectations.
The student then inserted the content provided by Matt Hodgson (summary, benefits) while leaving placeholders for financial inputs from Kurt Washington. The mentor explained how to improve readability and appearance through:
Appropriate headings and subheadings.
Consistent font styles and alignment.
Clear tables for partnerships and customers.
Use of logos and images in line with the style guide.
The mentor demonstrated how to use complex MS Word features:
Inserting page numbers and headers.
Adding a page break before the conclusion.
Creating a table of contents linked to headings.
Inserting a footnote in the product section with proper citation.
With Kurt’s financial figures, the mentor showed the student how to:
Create a formatted cash flow forecast table.
Insert a budget vs actual sales chart as an image.
Apply style guide rules for table borders, shading, and logo placement.
The mentor emphasised the importance of final checks before submission:
Previewing the report to check layout and consistency.
Ensuring spelling, grammar, and punctuation accuracy.
Saving files under correct naming protocols.
Following conservation policies (print only when finalised).
Through this step-by-step approach, the student successfully produced a professional, multi-versioned report that aligned with workplace standards and met the scenario requirements.
Outcomes achieved:
A polished report ready for CCRG Board presentation.
Proper integration of organisational style guide and formatting.
Accurate use of advanced word processing functions (headers, footers, TOC, tables, charts, footnotes).
Compliance with privacy, conservation, and ergonomic policies.
Learning Objectives Covered:
Application of organisational requirements when producing documents.
Structuring complex text documents to suit professional audiences.
Using advanced software tools for readability, accuracy, and navigation.
Managing document versions and maintaining quality control.
Demonstrating competency in workplace-style reporting and communication.
