You‘re employed as a team member of DataTrust and have just been elected as the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) on the Health and Safety Committee. It looks like not all is well with the health and safety of the team at DataTrust.
Mark Thrift, CIO, has just looked at last month’s incident report. He asks to see you and explains:
“It all seemed like a great idea at the time; I employed an external company to provide a fun, team-building weekend of training in a simulated cyber-attack environment. To spice things up a bit, we divided employees into competing teams; the first team to complete the challenge successfully would get a day’s bonus pay.”
Mark goes on to explain that there were a few unexpected outcomes of the weekend:
New recruit David Marks collapsed from exhaustion on Sunday afternoon. In a bid to impress his new employer, David ‘pulled an all-weekender’ in an attempt to be the first to resolve the simulated cyber security threat. He mostly worked alone, did not sleep for two days, ‘lived off Red Bull and vodka’ and forgot to eat. He barely made regular bathroom stops. Mark mentions to you that he had noticed this odd behaviour but thought nothing of it really… “It was all for the competition, but I guess I should have kept a better eye on him…”
Harry Forge is complaining of repetitive strain injuries, such as severe neck and shoulder pain. He claims it’s from being “chained to his desk” for the weekend.
Leanne Paynter is stating that she never received any WHS training as part of her induction and doesn’t know what’s required of her as an employee.
During the weekend, the property owner of the building in which DataTrust are tenants decided to run a fire drill. Some DataTrust staff were unsure which procedure to follow and refused to participate as they decided it was a drill only. Samantha Roser commented “These are such a waste of time… seriously, everyone knows you just follow the dudes in the coloured hats… They’ll tell us what to do and we’ll be right. No need to practise... it’s just cattle herding as far as I’m concerned.”
After consultation with Mark, you need to deal with the issues that he’s raised. He asks you to make the following tasks a priority:
Complete an incident report and risk assessment, as well as analyse previous year’s data 
Analyse WHS training needs of staff at DataTrust
Communicate with staff about the WHS issues and training
