PART A

B) How can ethical frameworks be used to understand and respond to ethical dilemmas?

C) Choose one case and clearly explain why you think it is an ethical dilemma and 

D) How being in a business context influences the decision-maker’s perspective and ethical choices (for instance, how organizational forces might influence the decision. You can focus on just one case in this aspect of the answer.

PART B

Analyse the cases using the following three (3) ethical frameworks from the course – namely Egoism, Utilitarianism, and Virtue ethics.  

Case 1 use Virtue ethics, Case 2 use Egoism and Case 3 use Utilitarianism. To do this well, you will need to ensure your analysis clearly communicates your understanding of each of these frameworks. Make sure you read the CRA as it will point to what you need to do to meet your grade aspirations. 

Case 1 Falsifying Attendance

Jason, a Junior System Administrator with the Management Information Systems Department, clocked in 4 minutes and 27 seconds late for work this morning. While he won’t get fired for it, being late this once means that he will not receive the perfect attendance financial incentive which he needs to pay his bills, given his daughter’s recent series of hospital visits. 

It’s not that Jason didn’t make an effort to be there on time. He actually arrived in the office five minutes early but was unable to clock in immediately because his direct superior, Kylie, asked him for an informal project progress report as soon as he walked in the door. 

As a Junior System Administrator, Jason has access and the capability to edit the company’s attendance records. He decides that since he was unable to clock in only because of his boss Kylie, it wouldn’t hurt to edit the arrival time on his attendance record for today. Would this be ethical?

Use the Virtue ethics model to analyse this case. 

Case 2 On-time delivery

Sanjay works for the maker of a high-end battery that is favoured by many electronics manufacturers. He receives bonuses for large orders but failure to fulfil orders is seen as unacceptable by his employer, BatteriesAreUs. Two weeks ago one of their high volume- but also high maintenance – clients placed a larger order with Sanjay for these batteries. Sanjay promised four-week delivery, as that is what he had been told by the manufacturing department. 

The client called today, saying he just wanted to confirm the batteries would be delivered on time, as he would have to shut down his assembly line if they were late. Sanjay knows, due to shortages elsewhere in the supply chain, that there is a 50/50 chance the batteries will now be late. He knows the client will go mad if he knew about a possible late delivery, and cancel the order which will have repercussions for him.

 Should he let the client believe that the delivery will be on time or not?

Case 3 The Romance Dilemma

Chris who is in charge of product planning for NewStuff Ltd meets Jenny at a conference. Both are single but Jenny is his counterpart at a rival company, BetterStuff Ltd.

After spending time together Chris realizes he has a strong attraction to Jenny. Chris also realizes from their chatting that his company NewStuff is way ahead in terms of new products for the coming year. In fact, they have acquired significant investment from BigBank due to their innovation but also due to their strict confidentiality and being ahead of the market.

Potentially Chris could do his company a lot of damage if the company’s new product plans were leaked to anyone outside the company. If Chris asks Jenny for a date before the new products are released it would also be in violation of the company’s Code of Ethics.

Chris believes that he would never disclose any company secrets as a result of a romantic liaison. He also thinks that no harm will come from breaching the Code of Ethics. Chris decides that because he will be very discreet in the relationship with Jenny no one will ever find out what he is up to. Has Chris made the right decision?
