Assignment Task

Objective

To enable students to gain an overview of how legislation determines compliance for an organisation, promote quality and use quality control tools for effective operations management, and promote internal and external compliance in an organization.

Scenario

You have been brought in as an advisor for the Auckland Business Chamber. Auckland Business Chamber is part of New Zealand’s largest business network organisation and part of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce network. Successful businesses ensure there are vibrant and successful communities, and the Chamber contributes to this through their support and advocacy that delivers the best platform from which businesses can operate. The Auckland Business Chamber is looking for your advice and input on the following. 

A new employer who is opening a small cafe/restaurant in central Auckland has come to the Auckland Business Chamber looking for some advice concerning their main obligations as an employer. In addition, they are looking for advice on how ensure internal and external compliance requirements for their cafe.

Auckland Business Chamber has also identified the need to create awareness amongst their employer members about their responsibilities in relation to compliance requirements in the workplace and applying operational techniques for continuous improvement in an organisation. Auckland Business Chamber has decided to produce a newsletter to their employer members for this purpose. 

Part A: Essay on compliance requirements (Individual) 

1. The aim of this assessment is to investigate the main compliance obligations and their impacts on operations for a new employer and provide advice.

1. Firstly, choose 1 (one) of the following areas and provide an overview of the key aspects:

• Workplace health and safety
• Public health and safety
• Tax obligations
• Consumer protection
• Privacy
• Record keeping and reporting

2. Secondly, the new employer has recognized that maintaining a focus on quality can help them in the competitive cafe/restaurant environment in Central Auckland. Choose 1 (one) of the quality control tools and recommend how this employer can use the tool to help them as part of continuous improvement to improve quality and manage their operations effectively.

Explain and present the information (using the appropriate diagrams where applicable) in such a way that it is clear for the employer and shows the impact of using this tool in their restaurant operations.

Part B:  Newsletter (Individual)

The aim of this assessment is to research and provide solutions to challenges and issues in an organization.

Choose one (1) from the following list of topics (or agree with the lecturer on a different topic):

• Mental health in the workplace
• Gender equality/diversity
• Equal opportunity for people with disability
• Equal opportunity for Maori (or other ethnicities)
• Bullying and harassment
• Age-diverse workforce

Define and provides solutions in the form of a newsletter to the employer in Auckland.  The newsletter should be informative, define the challenges of the workplace and should provide solutions to benefit the employer.  Your solutions must refer to New Zealand legislation.  Support your writing with at least 4 academic references.
