Advise Hans whether there is anything he can do about this situation. In January 2022, the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturer announced a worldwide
shortage of semiconductors due to a reduction in manufacturing due to COVID-19 and increased demand for semiconductors in the technology sector. Semiconductors are computer chips used in almost every electronic device in a car, as well as in mobile phones and computers.
LMW’s rivals announced that they would be experiencing delays in supplying new cars well into 2024. LMW’s main rival, French based Voiture De Luxe (‘VDL’), announced that they would be removing some technological features from their new vehicles which rely on the chips (such as parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and the 360-degree camera) so that they can maintain supply of new vehicles.
By March 2022, LMW’s senior management in Switzerland has managed to secure an alternate supply of semiconductors from a Japanese manufacturer, Big Chips. This means that LMW can continue to supply its vehicles with all of their technological features in place. Only the CEO of LMW in each country is aware of LMW’s relationship with Big Chips. Gloria, the Australian CEO, accidentally copied Roger in on an email to LMW’s head office in Lausanne in which they discussed the contract with Big Chips. Roger is LMW’s Chief Financial Officer and earlier that week, VDL had offered him a job. Roger declined because he didn’t think that the salary VDL was offering was high enough but having seen the email about Big Chips, he approached VDL again and asked how much more they would pay him if he put them in touch with a semiconductor manufacturer. VDL offers Roger significantly more money and when he has signed a contract with VDL, he tells VDL about Big Chips. He resigns from LMW the next day.
