CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN HEALTH SERVICES MANAGEMENT
Welcome to BUHEA6901 - Contemporary Issues in Health Services Management. This is the first of four courses with a focus on health services management. The following provides an overview of the course, an introduction to health services management and well as some of the practical information you will need to undertake the course with ease. There are nine topics that build upon each other each week. The course is not intended to provide you with detailed knowledge on these topics but is intended to broaden your thinking about your role and responsibilities as a health services manager in how you can provide quality care for everyone.
The following are the principles that underpinned the development of this course;
• To support students to think critically and ethically and how they can bring about change in their environment.
• To deepen student’s understanding of the human experience and society.
• To make strong links between policy, practice and the research evidence.
• To engender team skills through sharing in problem and inquiry-based learning.
• To develop peer learning, presentation and communication skills as well as excellent academic skills. Every student of this course is a health practitioner and this provides a great opportunity to share and learn from other disciplines and work settings.
As health services managers we are often responsible for multi-disciplinary teams and broader health systems so this shared learning can go beyond the course in building your skills as a manager. Allow yourself to reflect and comment freely; there is no right or wrong, health services management is so dependent on context so feel free to air your ideas, thoughts and experiences. So much more can be gained through free speech!
The Student Study Guide in Moodle will direct you step by step through the various topics for this course. This includes directing you to material and other readings posted in Moodle. Refer to it at all times. The Moodle site provides a Discussion Board which you can use to share course ideas and information. If you have any questions or observations that you think other students would be interested in then please place these on the Discussion Board.
It is vital that you check the Announcements on Moodle and your student email account regularly to ensure that you do not miss out on important information from the lecturer and Business School. Finally, good luck with your studies and do not hesitate to contact your lecturer for assistance. I really hope you enjoy the course; your feedback is welcome at any time either directly to the lecturer or via Evaluate, the university’s anonymous course feedback system.
