Assessment Description

There are two (02) components in Assessment 2, DIM sheet – ‘dimension paper’ and Bill Page submission and Online
Quiz. Each of the Assessment Parts are described below to assist you.

Assessment Part A: DIM sheet and Bill page submission (Week 8, 20%)

You will be required to use manual procedures to measure and take off building quantities using DIM sheet
and prepare the bill page (Part of Bills of Quantities) for a simple domestic construction according to standard method
of measurement. You will be provided with the relevant drawings and specifications.

Assessment Part B: Online Quiz (Week 10, 20%)

This requires you to sit a timed quiz. The quiz involves a range of questions including multiple choice, essay, and short
answers with calculations. You will have the opportunity to prepare for sections of the quiz via weekly learning activities
prior to attempting the quiz online. This means that you have an opportunity to revisit concepts that you feel require
more learning for understanding before sitting the quiz. Each of your responses will involve some higher order thinking to
apply your knowledge and understanding of core quantity surveying techniques to solve problems.

In this online quiz you will demonstrate your understanding throughout the course including followings.
• The role of the Quantity Surveyor throughout the project life cycle
• ASMM standards - identifying correct units of measurement and measurement rules/principles for variousitems
• DIM sheet conventions and calculation of quantities

Summary of Assessment Requirements

Assessment 2 consists of two major components:

Part A: DIM Sheet and Bill Page Submission (20%)

Students must manually measure and take off quantities for a simple domestic construction project using provided WAREHOUSE drawings and specifications.
Key tasks include:

  • Using a DIM sheet to record quantity booking, descriptions, side cast, and squaring.

  • Measuring two essential construction elements:

    • Trench excavation

    • Concrete footing

  • Preparing a Bill Page using measured quantities.

  • Following standard measurement procedures as per ASMM.

  • Printing, completing, scanning, and submitting the final DIM sheet and Bill Page.

Part B: Online Quiz (20%)

The online quiz is timed and includes MCQs, essays, short answers, and calculations. It assesses:

  • The role of the Quantity Surveyor throughout a project life cycle.

  • Knowledge of ASMM standards, correct units, and measurement principles.

  • Mastery of DIM sheet conventions and quantity calculations.

How the Academic Mentor Guided the Student

The Academic Mentor provided structured, practical support to help the student complete each section clearly and accurately. The guidance followed this sequence:

Step 1: Understanding the Assessment Brief

The mentor first helped the student interpret the assessment requirements by:

  • Breaking down each component (DIM sheet, Bill Page, Quiz).

  • Highlighting essential deliverables and deadlines.

  • Clarifying the importance of ASMM rules for correct measurement.

This ensured the student began with a solid understanding of expectations.

Step 2: Reviewing the WAREHOUSE Drawings and Specifications

The mentor guided the student through:

  • Identifying relevant views (plan, section, details).

  • Locating dimensions required for trench excavation and concrete footings.

  • Understanding notes, levels, footing depths, and widths.

This step ensured the student knew what to measure and where to extract information.

Step 3: Completing the T.O. (Take-Off) List

The mentor assisted in:

  • Listing all measurable items.

  • Structuring the take-off list clearly.

  • Ensuring no critical quantity was missed.

This created a foundation for accurate measurement.

Step 4: Completing the DIM Sheet

The mentor demonstrated:

  • How to correctly perform quantity booking.

  • Writing clear descriptions using ASMM-aligned phrasing.

  • Applying side cast (waste) calculations where necessary.

  • Performing squaring to finalise quantities.

The student learned how to maintain neatness, accuracy, and industry-standard conventions throughout the DIM sheet.

Step 5: Preparing the Bill Page

The mentor explained how to:

  • Transfer final measured quantities correctly.

  • Use standard formatting for Bill Pages.

  • Ensure descriptions match ASMM wording.

  • Organise items under proper headings.

This step helped the student understand the link between measurement and cost documentation.

Step 6: Finalising and Submitting the Work

The mentor guided the student to:

  • Scan clear images of both sides of the DIM sheet and Bill Page.

  • Name the file exactly as instructed ("QSP1 DIM and BILL_STUDENT ID").

  • Double-check completeness before submission.

Step 7: Preparing for the Online Quiz

To support Part B, the mentor helped the student revise:

  • The role of a Quantity Surveyor.

  • ASMM standards and measurement rules.

  • DIM sheet conventions and calculation methods.

Practice questions and weekly learning activities were discussed to build confidence for the timed quiz.

Final Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved

Through this guided process, the student successfully:

  • Accurately measured quantities from technical drawings.

  • Applied ASMM measurement standards correctly.

  • Completed a professional DIM sheet and Bill Page.

  • Strengthened skills in manual take-off, side cast calculations, and squaring.

  • Demonstrated understanding of core quantity surveying principles in the online quiz.

Learning objectives achieved included:

  • Understanding manual quantity measurement processes
  • Applying ASMM measurement conventions
  • Preparing structured and accurate take-offs
  • Translating measured quantities into Bill Pages
  • Strengthening analytical and calculation skills
