Report Writing Assignment:
Task:
You are to prepare a comprehensively illustrated report of approximately 900 -1100 words long to demonstrate your understanding of the relevant structural principles in a full-scale existing structure.
The structure can be almost anything that actually exists in the world, designed by a human. (Examples include a tower like the Killesberg Tower in Stuttgart, Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park, a mountain bicycle, a dining chair by Charles and Ray Eames, or a local park shade structure, an architectural “pavilion” or the wing of a Boeing 777.
There are a exceptions: the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Eiffel Tower
cannot be chosen as your structure (partly because there will be a lecture which covers these designs in general and partly to encourage exploring lesser known structures).
Your selected structure must demonstrate
at least 3 of the following structural element types:
- an element that manages bending forces.
- an element that manages axial compression.
- an element that manages axial tension.
- a truss like structure.
- a slab, plate or membrane structure.
- a grid structure.
- an arch like structure.
