A&Y Bakers was founded by Dewmi Jayarathne. The company produces a wide range of products such as bread, muffins, bagels, doughnuts, pastries, biscuits and so on. Though it was established in 2015, A&Y Bakers soon became an established bakery in the confectionery industry in Sri Lanka. A&Y Bakers has a wide range of stakeholders, including a dedicated customer base and suppliers. A&Y bakers has routinised processes, where ingredients are sourced, warehoused and used to prepare goods which are baked fresh every day. Customers can purchase bakery items manually, or through the A&Y website. Dewmi views her organisation as a system, and she has clearly defined herself and the staff as parts of the A&Y system. There are thirty full-time staff members in A&Y Bakers, and they are equally divided to two teams. One team is in charge of the production of savoury bakery items, while the other team is in charge of baking confectionary items. For the year 2020, A&Y Bakers have set a target to win the Best Baker Award 2020. Accordingly, Dewmi has established goals for the two employee groups, which is to increase individual employee production by 5%, while ensuring quality. However, this created personal conflicts in the team which oversaw the production of savoury items. Ultimately, these personal conflicts reduced the production and the overall productivity of A&Y Bakers. To resolve the employee conflict, Dewmi decided to try a new approach. Instead of having two separate employee groups and separate goals, she decided to involve employees in the overall production process and increase coordination. Accordingly, instead of having individual targets for employees, Dewmi established group targets, and by the end of 2020, the overall production of A&Y Bakers improved by 12%.
