Highlights
Business Scenario:
A nutritious diet is important at any stage of life, however, it can be expensive in comparison to unhealthy options. A Californian Health professional is concerned about food affordability and if any cultural group appears to be disadvantaged. The manager has several questions, i.e.
• How much are families spending on average on nutritious food?
• Do people of a particular race spend more of their total income on food than others?
• Are families in some counties of California spending more on food than others on average per year?
In order to answer these questions, a study was carried out by a research team in California. The average cost of a “market basket of nutritious food items”, as well as income and other variables was collected for “female-headed households with children” from 2006 to 2010. We have extracted a subset of variables.
Your Task:
You have been asked to investigate the data and make some conclusions regarding the Health professional’s questions:
Task 1: General Data management:
A. Refer to Workshop 3.
B. Write a simple data dictionary for this data file.
C.Explain the benefit of:
a) data dictionaries and
b) documentation in your own words.
D. Discuss the query language you would use to search this type of database and options for storing the database.
Task 2: Analysis & Interpretation:
A. Recall the work you did in week 7.
B. Sort median income in descending order.
C. State the maximum and minimum median income.
D. Discuss the ethnic group(s), average family size(s) and region(s) associated with the maximum and minimum median incomes you found in part C.
E. With regard to the results in part D, those groups spending only a small relative amount of their income have small affordability ratio’s, for example, if $7563 of $250000 is spent the affordability ratio is 0.0302519 (3%). On the other hand, food spending may exceed median income (perhaps due to welfare, etc) and in this case, the affordability ratio will be larger than 1.0. Discuss the affordability ratios for the groups you observed in part D.
F. With reference to the entire database, sort the ‘Cost per year of food in the named region’ column in descending order. Discuss the amount spent and ethnic group(s) associated with these amounts.
Task 3: Transforming Data:
A. Recall workshop 8
B. Consider line 38, 111, 253 of the data set.
C. Rewrite the three lines in column-oriented format.
Task 4: Unstructured data:
A. Describe the challenges and benefits of unstructured data.
B. Suppose that you are required to collect unstructured data about the families and their eating habits. Provide three different examples of the unstructured data that would be collected and explain why the data is unstructured.
Task 5: Generation and recommendations:
A. Provide practical recommendations regarding other data that you would need to work out the ratio of nutritious to junk food eaten by families.
B. Provide three references for task 5 and use the Kaplan referencing guide.
