Overview 

Students will study a small business or a business unit that they have not used in a previous assessment of their own choice and will produce two assignments. 
Report A, will provide a background to the business and the rationale for selecting the business. 
The final part of the assignment, Report B, will provide a growth report for the business and the requirements for this report are detailed below 

Selection of a firm 

Requirements for choosing a firm to study:

• You must be able to meet the ‘entrepreneur’ of the business at least once, this should be a face-to-face meeting (not skype/web ex or telephone) 
• The business must be independent and the entrepreneur must be able to decide which strategy to follow. 
• If the entrepreneur does not have the freedom to make decisions without having to refer this to a third party then the business is not suitable for this module 
• The firm can be a sole trader, partnership or be incorporated (e.g. UK Limited Company) 
• It is acceptable for students to study their own business or that of a friend or family member (the student must take steps to try to remain objective) 
• It is not necessary to ask the business owners for financial information about the firm – this is usually private information that the owners particularly in small businesses are unwilling to disclose. 

Report A, Introduction to the small business or a business unit 

You are required to submit an individual report introducing the organisation (not used in a previous assessment) you will be studying for your final report.

Your report should outline the following topics: 
• Introduction to the small business or a business unit – provide some background information - what does it do, where is it located, how many staff does it employ, how long in business 
• A discussion of why you chose this small business or a business unit (rationale) 
• A brief description of the entrepreneur 
• Your opinion of the growth performance to date of the organisation and how you have arrived at the opinion 
• A brief description of how you will approach your research, who will you interview or ask questions, what primary and secondary methods will you use?
