TASK
Assignment 1
Kim has just graduated from the University of Business and has applied for a summer internship with a business consultancy firm called London Business Advisory (whose main clients are large business sellers of products and commodities).
Kim has just found out that she has received an invitation to interview for an internship. Kim is aware that if she impresses members of the various departments at London Business Advisory, it may lead to a permanent contract at the firm. Kim has been told by Matthew, the HR Manager at London Business Advisory, that during the internship, the successful candidate would spend time in the Client Corporate Advisory Division. As part of the interview process, Kim is given a set of questions/tasks beforehand to prepare.
Kim is asked to prepare the following:
1. To read the article setting out Lord Sumption’s speech in Oxford University (2017) regarding the interpretation of contracts and to answer the following:
Traditionally, English contract law is said to favour the parties’ freedom to contract. This is for example seen in Lord Sumption’s case study of the 1663 contract regarding the port of Tangiers.
2. Discuss the rules regarding the formation of a contract and indicate whether you think these rules appear to favour the ‘freedom to contract’ approach (in your answer, ignore reference to consumer law).
3. Discuss the main business structures in the UK (eg. limited liability companies, partnerships, sole traders and limited liability partnerships) when advising clients on the most appropriate business structures for them.
Assignment 2
Critically discuss the extent to which businesses take Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) seriously.
Please read and analyse the following 3 articles. Your answer amongst other things, should draw from the 3 articles below as well as refer to wider UK and international frameworks for CSR. We will also look at these articles during the course.
The 3 articles:
1. Asset managers told to clean up greenwashing and net zero claims (Financial Times, 2022)
