Therefore, this year is going to be different in many ways. The secret for making this a good experience for us all is to take responsibility for your own learning, have patience, a sense of humour, and occasionally to pause and breathe. The aim is still the same though; to provide you with a good understanding of the dynamics of business strategy and finance.
 

I have been in education for more than 30 years, but originally came from a business background. Throughout my time in education I have also run a small business in partnership with my wife. More recently I have become a Trustee and a Company Director of a medium sized charity. I have been in this position before. It is interesting, but also demanding. At the University most of my teaching is with postgraduate students where I can be found leading this Unit and food and drink, which some of you have already taken.

I am delivering this unit with two colleagues, Dr Viachaslau Filimonau (Slava) and Jeff Sadd. Slava is an academic who publishes extensively in a wide range of subject areas. He has a number of specialist interests including, the food supply chain and sustainability. Jeff was a banker with Lloyds bank who came to an academic career later in life and will focus on finance. Between us we can offer you not only an academic perspective, but a practical one as well. There may be times when we have different opinions; such is life. We are all individuals and one thing that an academic training does help you develop is the ability to understand and evaluate data in order to make decisions. That is what life in general, and business life in particular, is all about; trying to understand our complex world, evaluate what we see and make decisions to move us towards our goals.
 

This unit focuses on developing an understanding of both the strategic and financial dimensions of business. We try to be as responsive as we can to student interest, so would welcome any questions and topics that you would like us to discuss.
