Case description

Imagine you are the new CSR manager for the fastest growing fashion company in Australia. Your company sources production from a range of countries including Bangladesh, Cambodia and China. The senior management team are becoming increasingly concerned with the ethics and sustainability of production and want to make this part of the company’s reputation and business model.

One morning your communications manager walks into your office to inform you of a big problem.  The Guardian newspaper has run a story that morning about mass faintings in the main factory you source from in Cambodia.  Your company’s name is mentioned a number of times in the article as the number one procurer from that factory.  The report notes that around 70 women fainted last week, with mass faintings becoming a frequent occurrence.  The article quotes from one of the women in the factory who had fainted.  She says she regularly feels weak and dizzy at work. The factory’s cooling system does little to reduce the temperatures in the sweltering hot building, she says, and she is perpetually hungry, thirsty and stressed on the job.

“Everyday is more and more difficult. The managers say they are losing profits and they have given us higher quotas that we have to complete in the same amount of time,” she says, “I don’t earn enough to be able to pay my bills and buy enough food as well as supporting my elderly parents in my home village”.

You conduct investigations about these faintings to find out how much the company knows and what action has been taken in the past.  You find that your company was alerted to mass fainting of workers in its supply chain factories last year. You also find that your predecessor had asked the factory manager to investigate the causes and address these issues. However, the factory manager had replied that current turnover and margin will not allow them to allocate funds to conduct such investigation, and address the issue.

In addition to the Guardian articles, you are now facing queries from customers on the company social media calling on the company to pay workers a living wage at least.

Group task: Your group needs to make a poster summarizing information to be presented to your company Board. This should describe (in words and pictures and/or diagrams):

1. Your immediate media strategy
2. Your company’s new ethical sustainable sourcing plan which will set out what you will do to ensure that you fix the problem long-term, taking in to account the interests of both your shareholders and your other stakeholders.

In addition to your group poster you are required to submit a 500 word individual summary addressing the following questions:

1. What do you think the key CSR issues are in this case?
2. Why do you think the recommendations you have made will be effective in solving these issues?
3. Why do you think the actions you have recommended have not yet been used and applied across the sector?
