They are also responsible for beautifying areas, creating jobs, and using resources that benefit their local community. The direct relevance of councils to communities is often understated. 

When councils are dysfunctional, the local community suffers. 

Instructions 

You must choose a council from your State lists found at the links below and conduct research into the council’s activities (download their sustainability report). You need to write a report that answers the following: 

1. What activities has your council undertaken to build sustainable economic growth while promoting jobs and stronger economies? What sort of ethical dilemmas could balancing these three area pose?

2. What is your council doing in relation to the health of the land, air and local waterways in its catchment? 3. What types of innovative sustainability programs are being funded by the council?

4. What are the main barriers to your council becoming a sustainable council?

The purpose of this non-assessable submission is to provide you feedback. Comments will be made, to help you in the final assessment but there will be no marks awarded in the 17 August submission. 

Submit a brief introduction about the council you have chosen; which includes its location, the number of residents in the area and identify its main sources of revenue and expenditure. It is also important to identify some of the key geographical features to help the reader become familiar with your council and identify some of the sustainability initiatives it undertakes. 

This should be no more than 150 words and will form the introduction in your final (assessable) submission. 

Ensure you include some brief context about your council choice, the purpose of the report, the scope of the report and any limitations (i.e.: missing information). The last sentence of the introduction should outline the organisation of the rest of the report.
