Description

This unit expands on paramedic practice and introduces the student to the intensive health and physical assessment of the acutely ill patient as well as the patient suffering from chronic disease. This unit reflects the change in paramedic practice in line with the changing health care environment and challenges the student to expand on their practice and assessment of patients throughout the lifespan, taking into account social, cultural and socio-economic factors.

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Construct a comprehensive assessment of a patient to inform the delivery of patient care

2. Formulate clinically sound plans for patient management based on assessment findings in a patient centred model

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the relevance and importance of comprehensive patient assessment

4. Analyse and interpret assessment findings to contribute to the development of a provisional diagnosis

5. Apply problem solving processes to the management of patients based on assessment findings, in an inter-professional health care environment

6. Apply a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to facilitate the assessment of patients accommodating diverse cultural, social and socioeconomic backgrounds

7. Develop an intercultural awareness and gain an understanding of the impact of culture on paramedic practice

8. Demonstrate knowledge of the changing discipline of paramedic practice, applying this knowledge to the provision of service in an inter-professional context

9. Develop a team work approach to practice which will enhance the delivery of health services to the community

Clinical Practice Analysis/Reflection

Students should consider the content and themes of this unit, select one theme that is relevant to their current clinical practice, and write a critical analysis/reflection paper based in their own practice and discussing the selected theme.
