Highlights
Task:
Description Moisture makes powder particles stick together. This is due to liquid bridges that form between the powder particles. In this project I will be analysing how the strength of the attractive force between the particles due to the liquid bridge depends on the relevant parameters (surface tension, contact angle, volume of liquid in the bridge, distance between the solid surfaces, ...). Liquid bridges can be viewed as model systems for oil-wet porous media with hydrocarbons stuck in the pores in the form of liquid bridges. The dynamics of liquid bridges thus has direct relevance for (enhanced) oil recovery.ObjectivesIn this project a theoretical approach will be complemented with numerical methods to be implemented in Matlab to quantify liquid bridge adhesion forces. You will aim for
(1) Understanding the theory of liquid bridges;
(2) Perform force calculations for systems of increasing geometrical complexity;
(3) Interpret results in terms of mobility of liquid in porous media.
