The context of this assessment is to explore a complex medical condition taking an evidencebased medicine approach to treatment recommendations. The student must complete a literature review, evaluate the evidence from an integrative medicine perspective and recommend appropriate complementary medicine interventions. To complete this task students will need to critically evaluate evidence and demonstrate critical thinking skills.

To complete the task students will need to critically appraise the literature and based on this propose appropriate therapetutic interventions. Students will need to investigate two-(2) complementary medicine (CM) treatments relevant to their modality (either herbal or nutritional or both).

The literature review, must be compiled from a search of the most recent (5-10 years) published literature about your topic; however, if there are limited studies you may go beyond this range.

It is expected that a minimum of 20 primary sources will be used in this literature review (see below). This is for the entire review not for the critical analysis section. A good rule of thumb is to have 5-7 articles to appraise for each therapeutic.

Select appropriate journal articles for inclusion in the literature review, sort these into the relevant headings and sub-headings, briefly summarise each piece of research and comment briefly on its quality, including the method of conducting the research and the relevance of the findings (where possible, to Australian patients).

It’s a good idea to start with meta-analysis and systematic reviews (where available) and work your way down through the levels of research. In systematic reviews and meta-analysis identify trials that were excluded and evaluate why. Look at more recent research and critically evaluate that too.

Depending upon your therapeutic(s) of choice, there may be limited human studies available, your research piece may then include some cellular studies, animal studies and any trials that connect the disease pathophysiology and selected herbal or nutritional therapeutic intervention. However, it is recommended that you select therapeutic(s) which have some human clinical evidence.

• Pathophysiology, Aetiology & Medical Treatment

A description of the anatomical, physiological and biochemical factors that are present in the condition and a discussion of the information you have found in the literature about various causes of the presenting pathophysiology. You should cover genetic, environmental, lifestyle, nutritional, psychological and any other relevant factors. Medical treatment and staging too.

• Proposed Herbal /Nutritional Therapeutic

Introduce the therapeutic intervention and its mechanisms of action as they relate to the pathophysiology of the chosen condition. Only discuss here as it relates to the condition.

• Literature review

This should be the major part of your assessment - a reporting and analysis of the information you have found in the literature. The selected references should be critically discussed,

compared and contrasted. Please also indicate any safety, toxicological or interaction data where relevant.

This section can be broken into two parts – results (reporting on the studies) and discussion (your critical analysis of the research) or alternatively these sections can be compiled together (both reporting and critically reviewing the literature).

• Conclusion

Give your conclusion based on the evidence presented. Do not put new material in your conclusion. Based on your findings discuss any future implications for research

Format your literature review using a plain, large, black font (Calibri or Times New Roman, minimum 12 point) and double spacing (use single-spacing for the reference list). Use appropriate headings and sub- headings throughout.
