Assignment Task

Students have learned in this unit about cells, and the biological processes that they are involved in to help maintain a healthy body. Students will create a case of a fictitious person who has cancer and present a case study of this fictitious person who undergoes several tests to eventually diagnose this person with cancer. This assignment encourages students to research the differences between cancerous and non-cancerous cells (as well as the bodily symptoms associated) in order to present the profile of a patient who has cancer. While several cancers are treatable, if diagnosed early, cancer has still not been eradicated, and continues to affect the lives of a majority of people, either directly or indirectly.

1. Identify a specific cancer that you will base this project on. This can be lung cancer, skin cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, etc.

2. Create the demographics of a fictitious patient that will have the cancer you selected above, including the following: name, age, occupation, gender, family history of cancer, and general lifestyle. Aside from the name, each of the demographics should reflect an increased risk of the cancer that you selected.

3. Create a health record portfolio of the following items:

a) A biological diagram of a biopsy of the tumor cells (include at least 10 cells in the drawing)

b) Side-by-side images of an actual MRI, PET, X-ray, or CT scan of the tumour area in an early stage of the selected cancer compared to a healthy individual. These images will most likely be from the internet. These images require a paragraph explanation about how the technology works, and how the cancer looks different compared to the healthy individual.

c) Physician's report on the possible causes of the cancer, including all environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors that can cause it.

d) The prognosis, as a script/letter to be read to the patient by the physician about the diagnosis and course of progress of their cancer.
