Introduction

Glancing behind to a South Africa we once knew during a racial discrimination period known as the apartheid era, its accurate to say South Africa has undergone numerous trajectories that have not only transformed it as a country but have also groomed South Africa to a democratic dispensation, a place where all can live in harmony. While the 1994 election period when constitutional negotiations were being held, the countries new foreign policy and international relations were already undergoing a transition. This essay will discuss the sources and principles of South Africa's foreign policy and also indicate South Africa's position, status, prestige in international politics and relations

Transition process

A transition process for South Africa's government also meant highlighting the capabilities and obligations concerning foreign affairs, therefore to carry out this process, a sub-council was placed into term. The sub-council's duties on foreign affairs were to observe and make recommendations regarding the foreign policy liaise but also help to secure an appropriate agreement with the international community regarding the contribution that the community could make to a nonviolent transition to democracy in South Africa and also ensuring that any foreign policy initiative profits the country as a whole and not one or other political party. Another duty for the sub-council was also to promote international relations including trade, finance and sports relations, this was to benefit the country as a whole. This also meant that the sub-council was to become productively entangled in a series of policy-planning conferences and also evaluating South Africa's bilateral relations with the rest of the world during the transition process.

South Africa's foreign policy and constitution

"A distinguishing feature of South Africa is the sustained interest of the rest of the world in the future of South Africa. The depth of the interest is not only confined to government but includes ordinary people and especially those who were involved in the anti-apartheid movement abroad. They have not disengaged themselves from South Africa since the election, however, the strength and persistence of the international focus on South Africa puts the South African government of national unity under pressure to contribute positively constructively to the global community" – (deputy president Thabo Mbeke. September 1995).

South Africa international relation was dogged by apartheid, by the end of the 1980's, South Africa was one of the most isolated states in the world which caused an immense strain towards the economy and development of South Africa , therefore South Africa needed to produce a pro-active foreign policy strategy to accomplish strategic objectives which serves the people and the country in general as much as possible, within this method, peace, democracy, respects of human rights and sustainable developmental needed to be accomplished. During this era, a foreign policy was prepared exclusively by the executive branch of government with no overlooking mechanism and also was composed to correspond with the constitution. South Africa is diverse from most other states in the supremacy of its constitution and I would argue that its foreign policy must be reflective of the spirit and objectives of the bill of rights with the aim of the executive being to protect, respect, promote and fulfil such rights. Some of the precise obligations which the constitution and subordinate legislation set on government were that the foreign policy should not clash with the realisation of these rights and this are not to say that relations between South Africa and the other countries should not be administered based on mutual respect but it should be absolutely clear at the same time that South African upholds human rights and the central plank of foreign policy.

In 2005/2008 a document was issued by the department of foreign affairs titled "strategic plan" which essentially supported the foreign policy by implementing the framework and strategic objectives of our foreign policy
