Highlights
Introduction
In Australia, cardiovascular disease and cancer are two most common causes of death in patients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (Lim et al, 2019). The American Renal Data System indicated that sudden death or cardiac arrhythmias was the primary cause for 37% of deaths in patients with ESRD ( Saran et al, 2016). Hemodialysis patients have a low chance of survival due to increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, including sudden death. Stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system is observed during hemodialysis sessions and may cause cardiovascular events that lead to sudden death.
Calcium (Ca) channel blockers are antihypertensive drugs that ESRD patients use. The article addresses a relevant medical challenge and discusses the possible unique inhibitory sympathetic nervous system effect of cilnidipine, a Ca channel blocker in patients with ESRD.
