Mr. Roberto Martinez is 54 years old and was originally born in Spain. He lives alone in a large house that he renovated with his wife over several years. Roberto had a successful building company until 2 years ago.

2 years ago, Roberto’s wife, Beatriz died due to colon cancer. The time from diagnosis to her death was brief and Roberto did not prepare himself for what was coming. He feels as though he could have done more. Since the death of Beatriz, Roberto has become withdrawn, not wanting to go out and is struggling to eat and sleep.

Roberto has a daughter Rackel who lives locally; Rackel is a single mother of two children who keep her very busy so does not see Roberto as often as she would love to. Roberto has been a heavy smoker all his life and has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which is managed with medication. Since the death of Beatriz, Roberto has noticed that he has become more fatigued and experiences shortness of breath. Roberto has been advised to stop smoking, but he insists that this is not an option for him now. Roberto has always been well presented, generous, kind and known as the “life and soul of any party”. He has a small social group with whom he and Beatriz shared group outings and dinners. Beatriz did all of the cooking, shopping, and cleaning at home, so Roberto is struggling to keep up and maintain tidiness in the house. Food in the fridge is rotten and Roberto has not changed his clothes or washed for close to a month. He smells strongly of urine and spends all day in bed with his cat Fluffy.
