Task
Cultural safety and cultural sensitivity are key elements in healthcare. The Standards for Practice for Registered Nurses expect nurses to exhibit cultural sensitivity when delivering care.
This task requires you to delve into the Case Study provided below. You will need to apply your insights from the readings and resources in the subject site modules and tutorials 1, 2, 3 and 4, and the First Nations Cultural Awareness Journey (FNCAJ), along with additional scholarly sources of information to demonstrate your application of key concepts in essay format:
1. Discuss the aspects of cultural sensitivity and safety in the case study.
2. From a trauma-informed and cultural perspective, outline considerations for assessing and managing care for and with Indigenous Australians.
3. Provide examples of two culturally respectful practices you could implement and incorporate into the person in the case study's care.
4. Detail how these practices aid the development of your own cultural capability concerning Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and knowledges.
5. Use the Clinical Reasoning Cycle to provide one instance of how each of the following decolonising approaches to healthcare can integrate Indigenous perspectives and deliver culturally safe care for the person in the case study.
Case Study:
Cultural Safety and Awareness in the Care of Liam
Liam is a 16-year-old Aboriginal adolescent from a remote community of Narrandera within Wiradjuri territory. His aunt has recently brought him to the local health clinic. She is concerned about his declining mental health. Liam has been experiencing severe anxiety, depression, and occasional panic attacks for the past eight months. He often isolates himself, has difficulty sleeping, and has lost interest in activities he once enjoyed. Liam usually enjoys school and has a strong academic achievement record. Lately, his academic performance has significantly dropped, and he has been frequently absent from school.
Liam's family has a rich cultural heritage, deeply connected to their land and traditional practices. However, they have faced ongoing challenges due to historical trauma, socio-economic disadvantages, and limited access to healthcare services. Liam's father passed away when he was young, and his mother works long hours, leaving Liam and his younger siblings in the care of extended family members.
Recently, Liam’s anxiety and stress have worsened. His aunt reported that Liam hears voices, particularly his late father's voice, which tells him he is not doing enough to support his family. Liam's behaviour has become increasingly erratic, including bouts of anger and social withdrawal.
Situation at the Clinic: Upon arrival at the clinic, Liam was reluctant to speak and avoided eye contact. The health professionals noted his dishevelled appearance and apparent distress. Liam expressed a strong desire to return home and was visibly uncomfortable in the clinical environment.
