Overview
Motor racing is highly competitive across all facets of its divisions, be it that of Formula 1 or the student design and built Formula SAE competition. Formula SAE has been pushing the talent of young engineers in designing innovative and competitive small formula cars since 1978. In recent years, the competition has moved to allowing Electric Vehicles (E.V) to compete, making way for increased complexity and new avenues for innovation whilst pushing the increasing demand for environmentally clean automobiles. QUT’s Formula SAE team has taken the challenge for the 2016 competition season to design, produce and compete with the electric vehicle dubbed QEV-1, Figure 1. QEV-1 brings to the design team an array of new challenges never seen when developing combustion race vehicles, however one design task that is extremely similar to that of the combustion car is the vehicles cooling system.
