Sam is a 48 year old non-Indigenous male who was living in Sydney with his partner Karen and working as a qualified refrigeration mechanic. Sam and Karen had a seemingly stable life. In 2010 Sam’s stepdad died. Sam was from a small family and he had been very close to his stepdad. Sam and Karen travelled to Queensland for the funeral and began to drink alcohol and use cannabis as a means for coping with the loss of Sam’s stepdad. Returning to Sydney Sam and Karen continued to use alcohol and cannabis. Sam was caught driving under the influence and lost his license for 3 months. He continued to work as a refrigeration mechanic but there was restrictions in his work due to the licence suspension. Sam experienced pressure from work colleagues and hipartner, his use of alcohol increased, he began to take days of work and he soon lost his job. His partner Karen left him not long after this. Sam was struggling to pay his rent, so he left Sydney and travelled to Adelaide and then North Queensland where he was couch surfing with friends for a few years, doing some casual work and fruit picking. Sam saved some money and rented a room at a boarding house in North Queensland. The boarding house was often noisy, there were break ins and conflict with other boarders. During one break in, Sam was violently assaulted, needing surgery for his injuries. Sam left the boarding house and tried living with friends, different boarding houses or accessing the homeless shelters in the community. He stayed in this cycle for the next three to four years. In 2017 Sam got a casual job at a car wrecker’s, saved money, and rented a unit in North Queensland. Later that year he got sick went to hospital for a length of time. As Sam was not able to work, he accrued rent arrears and lost his tenancy. After this Sam would access crisis accommodation or sleep rough, he began to drink alcohol more frequently. Sam’s health began to deteriorate, and he was frequently cycling between short term hospital stays and homelessness.
