Ali is an aboriginal man.  He had been living in an inner city suburb of Sydney with his Italian wife Norah for 20 years. They have 5 children; 3 sons aged 8, 10 & 12 and 2 daughters aged 14 and 16. Ali worked for the city transport department and his wife Norah worked part-time as a midwife in the big city hospital, between the two of them, they earned enough money to live comfortably. Their children went to private schools and had good grades. Ali and his family were very happy. One day Norah was walking home from work and she got hit by a drunk driver on the zebra crossing. She sustained massive injuries and later died in hospital, leaving behind Ali and his five children. Ali was so overtaken by grief that he could not fulfil his duties at work and was forced to resign or be sacked. Since leaving his job, Ali could not keep up the payments for his children’s school fees and they had to be taken out of private school and placed in the public school system. At school the children’s grades suffered and they began failing at school. The younger children started showing signs of neglect and the school teachers notified the Department of Family and Child Services who arrived at Ali’s house and removed the children. The children were all separated and placed in individual Foster Homes leaving Ali alone at home to deal with his immense issues of loss and grief. Ali was referred to your Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agency for support. In your social work role, what steps would you take to assist Ali in his current situation.
