Task
Scenario
Companies are increasingly confronted by new types of threats that can affect individual computers and large or multiple computer networks. Malicious software such as worms, viruses, Trojan horses quickly self-replicate and can spread to disrupt a company’s computing and informational infrastructure. Loss of privacy, information integrity and availability of resources are now typical consequences of poor protection from technical threats. A business impact analysis conducted with the help of an external consultant revealed that significant financial and other intangible loss might arise if steps were not taken to defend against threats to the company’s informational store. It was decided that there is sufficient justification for a need to initiate a project to create an information security master plan to defend against these threats, and in the event of a breach, how to minimise the impact caused by the disruption to the company’s informational store.
This is the initial project meeting and is to be attended by all key personnel within the company. The agenda for this meeting is to identify threats to critical business processes with respect to the logical (software) part of the organisation’s informational store and to identify the various countermeasures that may be taken to mitigate these threats.
Tasks
Making use of the case study scenario provided, role play your assigned positions within the company and discuss the various threats to critical business processes that may affect the logical (software) part of your organisation’s information store. You will also need to discuss how you would defend against the identified threats. You may make any reasonable assumptions in your discussion, but you must state these assumptions clearly in your written work.
The head of each Business Unit (BU) is the expert for their individual area and is responsible for guiding the discussion within the scope of their BU. The other member of each group will join in the discussion on the viability of each "solution" presented, or present alternative "solutions" if any. The best "solution" will be documented for the written submission. While team consensus is preferable, the CEO may exercise his veto power and select one that he/she deems the best if the issue is hopelessly deadlocked. The CEO is also responsible for guiding and monitoring the discussion in general.
You may find it helpful to:
Report
1. The report should identify and briefly describe threats of a technical nature as well as their possible impact. It should describe the countermeasures that may be taken to either mitigate the occurrence of the threat, or to minimise the impact of the threat if it occurs.
2. The team will need to discuss at least 2 threats per BU, giving examples of how these threats may affect the BU.
3. Please state clearly any assumptions you have made.
4. Please include a list of bibliography of the research/materials you have used.
