CASE STUDY OF THE SALVATION ARMY OASIS YOUTH SUPPORT NETWORK AND ORYGEN

Overview:

Description: In this assessment you will submit an essay that analyses and compares two youth work settings, and you will draw on theoretical and professional bodies of knowledge to assist you to do this. 
Begin by picking two youth work setting that you are interested in researching and analysing. 
Then research these settings to collect the data you need to write your essay. Only use secondary source material (do not conduct interviews).

Your essay will include the following:

An introduction: Introduce the reader to the essay, and briefly and clearly introduce the sequence of arguments in your essay.

Youth work setting profiles: The next two sections of your essay will profile the two youth work settings. The profiles should be approximately 700 words each and should provide the reader a clear picture of what and where the setting is, what it does, who works there, how it works with and/or for young people, why it exists, and how it connects with and is shaped by the policies, contexts and ideas in which the setting is located. All claims should be supported with relevant evidence that is correctly referenced. (it should be approximately 1400 words).

Comparative analysis: In the next section of your essay compare the two settings. Some questions to help guide your comparative analysis include: how are the settings similar or different, and what helps to explain these differences? In what ways do the settings reveal young people, youth workers and youth work in similar or different ways, and why is this the case? The comparative analysis should identify and analyse four ways the settings are similar or different. (it should be approximately 400 words).

Key lessons: in the final section of your essay describe two things you have learnt from the setting profiles and the comparative analysis about youth work and describe the significance of these lessons for your emerging professional youth worker identity

How the settings connect with and are shaped by policies, contexts, and ideas in which the setting is located,

In the Youth Sector Setting Profiles you are asked to describe how the setting connects with and is shaped by the policies, contexts, and ideas in which the setting is located. For example, if you are profiling a youth housing service you might describe a government policy that is relevant to youth housing and homelessness and connect this to the service, or you might describe relevant academic research on youth homelessness that demonstrates the need for the youth housing service. Similarly, if you are profiling a youth mental health service you might describe a government policy that is relevant to young people’s mental health and connect this to the service, or you might describe relevant academic research on young people’s mental health that demonstrates the need for the youth mental health service. Or, if you are profiling a child protection service you might describe a relevant law and how the law is relevant to the service. And remember any policy, practice-based, academic literature, or law you refer to needs to be correctly referenced in your assessment and in the bibliography/reference list.

In the youth sector setting profiles you are required to support all claims with relevant academic and practice-based literature that is correctly referenced.
