Brown Coal Primary School in Victoria has been closed for the past 10 days because the local open cut coal mine has been on fire. The community in the town of Brown Coal has been talking about fire and the effect on people’s health. The fire is now under control and the children are returning. There is a lot of discussion around the fire and how this has affected the local community. The principal thinks it’s a good idea to work through some of the emotions the children are feeling with a science project that examines how the fire happened and the effects of the fire on the town.
Mr Benjamin and Ms Newcombe are the grade two teachers at this school. Mr Benjamin thinks it’s a good idea to invite Jim the firefighter to talk to the children about how they put out the fire and for the children to write a story about it. Ms Newcombe is looking for a different approach to support the children’s wellbeing and learning about the coal mine and the fire.
