Introductions
In this assignment, you will be creating drawings of a standard cattle guard for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The figures below show various cattle guard designs in the United States. Cattle guards are used in rural areas to prevent cattle from leaving a fenced area while allowing automobiles to freely come and go without requiring a gate. Cattle guards consist of steel grates with gaps that are large enough for the hooves of cattle to slip through. Cattle are too afraid to step on these grates, while automobiles and people can easily cross over.
Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Standards
Most state governments in the USA have developed standard design requirements for roads and related construction. The State of Utah has posted many of its standard designs on the internet.
UDOT Standard Pre-cast Cattle Guard
The figure below shows that the standard cattle guard in Utah consists of modular end units, center units, and welded end-guard units. These standard modules allow cattle guards to be built of varying widths by increasing the number of center units used. If only one center unit is used as shown in the figure, the overall width would be 24 ft.
The UDOT cattle guard design includes pre-cast concrete units. “Pre-cast” means that these concrete units are made before-hand in a factory and then brought to the construction site and where they are installed. The following photograph shows pre-cast concrete end and center sections at the Harper Precast facility in Salt Lake City.
