Electronic Poster You will prepare an Electronic Poster like those presented at scientific conferences. Your Electronic Poster should be produced in Microsoft PowerPoint as a single A1 sized page in Landscape. The Microsoft PowerPoint electronic file should be submitted via the module Bb site. A copy of the feedback sheet which will be used in the assessment of your work can be found in Appendix 2. Your Poster should provide a) the trends, over a ten-year period (2010 – 2019), in the α diversity of the bird community in the Seaton Carew Dunes area b) evidence that plant and bacterial α diversity patterns associated with Seaton Carew Dunes are consistent with those expected for communities undergoing succession Teesside University Module Title: Ecology and Biodiversity Department of Science Module Code: CBE2037-N School of Health and Life Sciences Module Leader: Dr David Wright Page 9 of 21 You will use the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Atlas website (https://nbnatlas.org/) to access data on the annual species occurrence records (2010 – 2019) associated with the bird communities within a 0.5 km radius of the three grid references (NZ53892745; NZ2535285; NZ52323006). You will be expected to analyse these data sets to determine key α diversity metrics (richness, diversity and evenness), which would indicate if the diversity of the bird community is declining, increasing or remaining stable. You will be provided with data sets collected from the chronosequence at Seaton Carew Dunes (sand dune complex) which provide details on the plant community (richness, abundance, cover and height) and bacterial community (richness and abundance). Students will be expected to analyse these data sets to determine key metrics of, including α diversity (richness, diversity and evenness), which would indicate if the communities are undergoing succession. For the bird, plant and bacterial community, you will be expected to analyse data using Hill Number and Hill Number Ratios. The equations for a series of commonly used biodiversity indices, including Hill Numbers, are provided in Appendix 3. In addition, a series of Bite Size ReView tutorials, focused on the use of Excel to calculate and present biodiversity indices data will be made available via the module Bb site. To visualise your findings, in the Results section of your Electronic Poster, you are required to present a number of figures (graphs) reporting on various aspects of the α diversity of the selected group as follows.
• Mean Annual Bird Species Richness, Diversity and Evenness against year (2010-19)
• Mean Plant Species Richness, Diversity and Evenness with Distance from the Spring High Tide Line (m)
• Mean Bacterial Taxa Richness, Diversity and Evenness with Distance from the Spring High Tide Line (m) Indicate the dispersion of your results statistically by including error bars (Standard Error of the Mean; ±SEM). Graphs should include Students will need to demonstrate their ability and to analyse the sand dune chronosequence and NBN Atlas datasets using appropriately selected quantitative measurements such as diversity indices (LO5; LO8; LO9). They will be expected to demonstrate their ability to interpret their findings in light of ecological theory (LO1) and the ecological literature (LO3). Students will be expected to prepare a poster suitable for an audience of professional environmental and biological scientists (LO7). (Learning Outcomes Assessed 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9). Reassessment will take the same form as the above.
