This assignment is the main assessment for CEIC4000. It is a substantial written piece of work that requires you to  investigate a sustainability issue of your choice in depth, apply the concepts we develop during the course, and develop  and argue a point of view. This requires you to read a lot about your topic, read all the course readings, engage in  discussion so that you develop a deep understanding of course concepts, and to synthesise and create. 

There are draft stages for the assignment, to provide you with written feedback. The first stage draft comprises three very  short answer submissions that will be graded either full marks (satisfactory), or none (not satisfactory). The purpose of  this is only to asess whether you understand the concept or not and to correct that if there is a problem. The second draft is a full draft submission and is assessed for marks (by your academic marker), and provided with comments (from peers,  and from your academic marker). 

Topic choice 

Choose a sustainability issue that you care about, except one of the proscribed topics listed at the end of the assignment.  Make sure you understand what "sustainability issue" means (check the course glossary) before you commit to a topic. 

The assignment 

Introduce and explain your chosen sustainability issue. Explain why it is a sustainability issue (what variable is  changing? what human need is at risk of not being sustained?). Explain whether your chosen issue is best understood as  an environmental, economic, or social sustainability issue and explain why it is best classified this way. 

Estimate when your identified human need will likely not be sustained, because of your sustainability issue. "Not  sustained" should be taken to mean that the identified need is met 20% less than currently, on a per-person basis.2 If it  turns out that your identified need is truly sustainable in respect of your identified issue, your answer will be "never" – but you will need to demonstrate that it is the case. 

Make a judgement about the extent to which a member of Engineers Australia (working in a relevant field) is  required to act to mitigate your identified issue. Using ethical reasoning to support your judgement. Things you  might consider in developing your position and your arguments include the timeframe and and magnitude of impact for  your issue, compared to others you may be aware of; the likelihood and implications of social collapse as it may relate to  your topic; plus the more obvious considerations relating to professional responsibilities. You should consider the moral  acceptability of acting or not acting.  

Make a judgement about whether Engineers Australia should should do anything about the possibility of near  term social collapse3. Use ethical reasoning to support your judgent - including your own values and core beliefs, or  any other basis you feel is appropriate. This is an opportunity for you to exercise leadership by advocating an appropriate  position and arguing your case. Convince the engineering profession that you are right!
