Introduction

Your dissertation is intended to be a central and integrating element of the Masters degree programme at NCI. It is designed to afford postgraduate students the opportunity to exercise their creative, questioning, analytic, and writing skills in a focused and practical manner. It is also intended to give students the chance to develop an in-depth understanding of some specific topics related to their chosen discipline. One of the hallmarks of a dissertation is that it must go beyond mere description. Those currently working in organisations may often be called upon to compose and deliver descriptive reports to their managers. These are obviously a critically important element of workplace duties. However, the dissertation is much more than this as it functions as a critical evaluation of a research topic. Typically, this “extra” dimension will require three distinctive elements:

1. It will be couched in terms of a key question
2. The question will have a theoretical context
3. This will necessitate the student carrying out both theoretical and empirical investigations

Structure of the programme
The following table outlines the dates of each of the research method sessions. Students have a choice to attend either live via Teams or in retrospect via Moodle. These sessions are mandatory, so you must ensure your attendance; this information may be used to determine borderline cases.

Section 1 – Divided into two sessions, Section 1 will introduce the research process and give an overview of what a dissertation involves. Topics covered will include developing an area of interest, conducting a literature review, and ethical considerations for conducting research. These sessions will be delivered by Rob MacDonald.

Section 2 – Divided into two sessions, Section 2 will provide a general overview of the philosophy of social sciences, how research fits within this, and then an overview of
qualitative approaches to research. There will be an assignment worth 15% linked to this section. These sessions will be delivered by David Mothersill.

Section 3 – Divided into two sessions, Section 3 will then look at the quantitative approach to research which will focus on the key skills you need to be able to read and
understand a quants based journal article (i.e. there will be very little statistics involved – it is more about understanding what the statistics mean rather than being able to do the maths). There will be an assignment worth 15% linked to this section. These sessions will be delivered by Ger Loughnane.

These sessions focus on research methods skills development. Semester 1 will focus on ensuring that students can read and interpret journal articles from both qualitative and quantitative methodological traditions and the overall structure of the task in hand i.e. what a proposal and ultimately a dissertation should look like. It is important to note that the Student Led Drop-in Clinics are an opportunity for you to ask any questions you have following on from the live lectures. They will not be a repeat of the live lectures! At the end of Semester 1 students will be required to submit a research proposal – usually with a submission date in January. The final dissertation submission date is provisionally set for August 2021.
