The term habitus is used to explain how our habits (taken-for-granted behaviors and ways of thinking) and habitat (the place we live and its structures) reinforce one another. Using examples of the Han Chinese and Bai, explain how societal and religious norms are tied to gender roles. Do you think that in their religious practices, people are able to diverge from the societal norms and expectations of everyday life? Why?

• Please define the terms you would be using in the response, for example, if you use the term “religious practices,” please explain what you mean by these religious practices.

Instructions:

1. Responses should show original thinking and not just a repetition of the readings or lecture content. Try to stay focused on the argument you are making, while still showing awareness of the points made in the readings.

2. The question should be written as two related questions. The first is largely based on synthesizing the relevant points from the readings and the second is focused on your own opinion or speculation (though this can draw on the examples). Ideally, these two will complement each other, your use of examples to answer the first part should logically connect to the ideas you express in the second. (the examples should be used from readings given only)

3. The response should demonstrate understanding of the readings, original thinking and strength of argument, proper formatting and citations, and writing style.

4. The Romanization of Chinese terms should be italicized unless it is a proper noun or a term commonly used in English. For example, Xinjiang and superstition (mixin). If you do not include the character the same rules apply for italicizing terms.

5. Sources should be cited as in-text references ordered: “name year, page number.” For example, “(Harrison 2013, 175)” or “Harrison argues... (2013, 175)”. If you are referencing the general argument they are making then the page number can be omitted. No bibliography is needed unless you include sources other than the assigned readings. 

6. Please only and absolutely include the 3 readings that I will email separately. If it is necessary, you can only cite a line or 2 from outside but don’t bring in ideas from outside sources.
