Systems Transformation
Overview
For this domain assignment, you will complete two activities: a change analysis and risk improvement plan. We recommend that you read the Domain Assignment Rubric before you complete the assignment to understand how your submission will be evaluated.
Change Analysis
The change analysis is based on the elements of the change model found below. The change analysis should be 1–2 pages (no more than 1,000 words). Complete the following sections of the analysis as follows:
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Introduce the change analysis by describing the change initiative. This paragraph should describe the current state of the organization or team and the future state of the organization or team. Additionally, note any features of the organization that may have a significant impact on the initiative. Avoid repeating unnecessary information about your organization as that is already established in your case study.
Paragraphs 2-4: Elements Lacking in the Change Plan
The next paragraphs will follow the same structure, but each should focus on a different element from the change model. Spend some time reviewing your organization’s change initiative and determine three elements from the model that were lacking or are suboptimal or incomplete. Take each element and think through how it applies to your organization.
Based on your analysis of each element, identify the top three that were lacking. In each paragraph, describe the element that is lacking, evidence of it missing, and the impact its absence had on the overall change and organization. Each of these paragraphs should be approximately 200 words.
The following questions will support you in your analysis:
Pressure for change
To what extent is the pressure for change/big opportunity expressed in a way that is clear and understood by you? By members of your team?
What reactions do you see in your team? What reactions could you anticipate?
Clear shared vision
What is the ideal outcome of the transformation/change?
Beyond creating greater effectiveness, what is your purpose in making this change?
Strategic goals and systems
If you were asked to provide a picture of the outcome so that people can imagine it, what would that picture be?
Who is creating the plan and where is co-creation possible?
Capacity for change
Here are a few factors that affect organizational readiness for change. Which ones are at play in your change initiative? How would you assess these factors?
Emotional residue leftover from past changes, especially recent changes
Degree to which people understand the marketplace forces that are driving the changePerceived value of the change: whether people understand and agree with its importance to the organizationPeople’s willingness to let go of the status quo or their past success in order to commit to a new futureThe degree of influence people feel they have over making this change, as opposed to feeling that the change is being done to themPeople’s beliefs about how much support they will get from leadersPeople’s perception about how capable and credible the leaders are in leading this change effectively. The degree of competence people feel they need to be able to succeed in making the change a success and in fulfilling its requirementsThe degree of fear people have about failing at either the operational duties or the change
People’s feeling about whether they think the organization has adequate resources and skills to succeedPeople’s feelings about the level of urgency communicated about the change, and their ability to respond effectively in the given timetable. The number and pace of recent changes people have undergone and the personal toll these created. People’s feelings about whether or not decisions regarding the change will be made fairly and justlyPeople’s assumptions about whether or not they will lose power as a result of the changePeople’s comfort with chaos—their need for order and knowing how things will unfoldActionable steps
To what extent do you have actionable steps?
If you were to co-create actionable steps, who would you co-create them with and how would you go about this process?
Model the wayWhat are the desired behaviours with the changes that are ahead?
How are these different from what is expected now?
Reinforce and solidify the changeHow will you celebrate success at the end and along the way?
How will you identify and reward the new desired behaviours? Where do you need to integrate these new behaviours?
Evaluate and improveHow effective were your strategies for building readiness and ensuring adequate capacity to make the change(s)?
How well did you handle changing the mindset and behaviour of your leaders and stakeholders?
How much more capable is the organization in keeping itself on the cutting edge and continuously adapting now than before the change?
Paragraphs 5: Key Insights
Consider the following questions to help you identify your insights:
How would you modify your approach to change in the future, based on what you have learned about change?
Change your perspective (i.e., place yourself in the shoes of a colleague or team member): Do you still view the change in the same way?
What were the long-term effects of a lacking element in your change initiative?
Risk Improvement Plan
In the first part of this assignment, you identified three elements of a change initiative that were lacking. In this next part of the assignment, you will develop a risk improvement plan for each of these elements. This portion of the assignment should be approximately 1–2 pages (no more than 700 words). To complete this plan, complete the following steps for each lacking element (approximately 200 words per element):
Describe the risk to change by not having the element.
How will the absence of this element in the initiative affect the overall change?
Identify 2–3 strategies to mitigate this risk.
Each strategy should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based (relative to the timeline of the change).
Ensure that you read the rubric to understand how your assignment will be evaluated.
