Characterisitcs of groups
Interdependance :
When I came the first day the group was already formed . Before getting into class a group member saw me coming in and knew me from the previous zoom call. She felt familiar with me and confied that someone was leading the group in a directive manner . I felt that the group had unequal interdependance which means that the she felt she was not in control of the group presentation . When I came into the group I tried to understand and communicate with everyone in order for everyone to feel equall;y heard to be mutually interdependant (Benne & Sheats, 1948).
Goals, interaction and cohesion:
I felt when I came into the group I redefined the norms of the group as the directive leader wanted to talk and do more in the presentation than others that was drawback. I ask for everyone to have an equal time of shared part in the [resentation and responsability. The dynamic changed and the before directive leader was ready to compromise and share the leadership as I explained it would be better for all of us .
The group’s entitavity was not high ;I suggest that is because I was maybe not here from day one or the time was too short to build a great chesion between all of us to feel that basic essence of a group. Moreover , one of the member was not marked so it could influence this cohesion as she was a bit on the outside of the action. She did work but her energy was not as concerned as others(Blanchard et al., 1929)
leadership
We had all a role in the task but all of us played a different roles such as one was a compromiser, putting everything together , seeking information and an harmonizer.
As group members and faciliators we executed a shared leadership such a decentred leadership help to break the monopoly of a person, their influence and authority to giuve responspacibility to others . Nevertheless this dynamic was put in place the second day . When I was not here according to the impression given from a member there were more one leader than five shared leadership(Pearce et al., 2008).
The commuhnication was flowing during the task preparation and the cohesion , solidarity and unity of the group was solid as we all agreed on deadlines, topics, activities of the presentation.
Nevertheless the communication took two days to get on point or at least functional as some members were not actively listening to others and no messaging communication out of class was in place (Stevens & Campion, 1994).
Stage of group Development:
The forming stage happened when I was away but I could feel that at th begginging of day two when I came in there were a poor cohesion , coalistion by the energy of the group. a member of the group was disatisfied towards the task and the leader. During this stage people were too embarassed to express their personal opinions. The tension was building up when I came .And, as one person did not have to be marked she did not impose her opinion.
By the end of day two the energy of the group shifted by communcating the reason of the choice of this framwork and the sharing of the task . I also made sure everyone had an established roles which was very vague when I came in the morning. We finished the day on the normaing stage structure which was necessary to get the task done and finish by the end of the next day !
The deadline forced us to reach performing stage by achieving our goals to be able to finish in time the presentation . We solved problem thanks to the good communication , collaboration of the group . The group became more organized and it helped to work out uncertainty . We took decision as on group member had to stay home because of a COVID last moment quarantine.
I think at the end of the residential school we were between the norming and performing stage because somethings were not flowing because of the cultural difference of the group(Tuckman & Jensen, 1977).
Cultural difference plays a huge impact on the cohesion and task performance and result:
In our group we had very different type of cultural dimensions according to Hofstede mutli-cultural research.
It provided an advanatge such as skills and different perspective eventhough not everyone was ready to listen to different view point on the task . On the overall , we all have been heard.Hofstede dimensions include : power distance (high/low), Indivicualisn ( collectivism) , masculinity( feminine) ; uncertainty avoidance (high/low), long or short term orientation and indulgence (restraint).
High score in Masculinity for Australian members showed in the group presentation one members took too much time as they wanted to show their best without taking the group time limit in consideration according to members coming from more of a feminine culture for example. Morover , Australian have low level of uncertainty avoidance versus the culture of others which made me very stressed to not be able to know what to do as the time was running out and it was difficult to communicate with this member as at the last minute she had to be on zoom. These factors engendra internal conflicts for myself.
Furtermore, the person in charge of the time had difficulty to communicate to this person on zoom as Australian culture is highly optimistic, positive attitude ( indulgent) and asking someone to stop was hard for her in that regard as the person was having fun talking (Hofstede, 2011).
The strength of our team was also that difference of skills , knowledge and ability:
Research recongise the efficiency of a group depends on the amount of different skills in a team for execution a same task(Devine & Philips, 2001)
Conflict: p391 livre
As a group with work on sharing tasks and activities could sometimes disagree with each other. This type of conflict is called task conflict; it is what happened in our group when someone wanted to do more than others and I did not agree as I thought we shall all be with a equal amount of work. These type of issue emerge from a disagreement that could have an impact on the group’s goal and outcomes. If that is not manage in time and efficiency task conflict can spill over to more personal conflict. In our group experience the conflicts were dealt with reasonable compromise for the purpose of the group. We had a very limited time which helped to resolved the confict as they are a time waster(Burnstein & Worchel, 1962)
When a conflict emerge the best solution os to collaborate as avoidance and fighting are temporary solution and negative method that tend to intesify the conflicts (Sternberg & Dobson, 1987).
