Highlights
Part A: Reflecting on cultural perspectives
Write your answers to the following questions:
1. Identify which cultures have influenced you in your life.
Culture is practices and believes that a group of people or society follows. There are many different types of cultures in this world. To choose a culture which influences me in my life is a bit hard because I grew by in two cultures (Afghan and Pakistani). I was born in Afghanistan, raised in Pakistan and now I am in Australia. Somehow I have all three cultures in me such as the way I dress when I go out with friends to compare to the way I dress for Festivals and celebrations in Afghan culture. I would say Pakistani culture has influenced me the most out of the three since I grew up in Pakistan, watching Pakistani dramas and TV shows, Pakistani food, and the culture. It has become a part of me and has influenced my choice of life, the way I dress, sense of being, interact and communicate with other people and varieties of food I choose to eat.
2. Reflect on how these culture(s) have influenced you in relation to the following points:
My beliefs, values, and attitudes has been influenced by my culture in many significant ways both good and bad. Firstly, as an Afghani, I would say we value hospitality and people a lot. We don’t go to people's houses empty-handed and if someone comes to your house they don’t go back hungry. I do have a strong belief in Allah (God) especially being from Pakistan which is a majority Muslim country. Because this belief would say I’m more conservative and modest in the western world. Immigrating from Pakistan to Australia is one of the significant events in my life. It has influenced me to be bolder and has made me a stronger person. Learning a whole new language, adapting to a whole new culture and being introduced to so much more staff all at once was stressful. I lived in a small conservative community, everyone was mostly Muslim and modest, the population wasn’t that much and not a lot of jobs for female and for men mostly construction jobs or they owned their own business.
3. Identify three ways to further develop your cultural competency and social awareness.
Three ways you can further develop cultural competency and social awareness is by recognizing culture extends beyond skin color or the stereotypical features, by communicating with other people to gain more knowledge and get to know the community. Attend local events around about different cultures and get to know the people around to have a better understanding. Don’t assume people would or would not be from a certain culture based on what they look like. Do your research and communicate with people. They are a lot of celebration such as Eids, Ramadan, Islamic New Year and holy month such Muharram. People from different cultures come together to celebrate, share happiness and joy with each other more often people learn about each other that creates unity and acceptance among people.
4. Why is it important for Education Assistants to demonstrate respect for other cultures?
It is important for Education Assistants to demonstrate respect for other cultures to avoid racism or prejudice behaviour in the classroom towards the students especially and the teachers. Respecting other cultures builds a better understanding between people. It makes it easier to interpret the international student’s behavior. It could be something small as not making eye contact when the teacher is speaking as some countries have this rule other cultures find it rude because it shows that you are not paying attention. Education assistants also role models for students and from a young age they learn from adults such as parents or guardians, teacher, and education assistant so we have to set a good example for them. Learn about different cultures bring more understanding about their behavior and the way of learning so as education assistant give the help they need to learn the curriculum.
5. Where would you access information about equal opportunity and the laws relating to it in Western Australia?
You can access information and laws on equal opportunity on the government website WA. It also shows you the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984. It gives you information on how to Act was established, who the bill was passed by, when and why. On the website, it shows you issues that are covered by the Act such as discrimination, sexual harassment, racial harassment and victimization in specific areas of public life.
6. List one article from the Human Rights of the Child which relates to cultural diversity and inclusion No one can take your rights

Sitting close by is Shagufta who is having her lunch with another group of staff members. Shagufta works in the Kindy room as an EA, is Muslim and wears a Hijab. Gloria starts to talk about the recent terrorist bombings in Europe and says that it was terrible to see it on the news. The others agree but Gloria goes on to say that in her opinion all Muslim women should be banned from wearing a Burka when they go to public places. No one at the table makes any comment. Shagufta looks down and leaves the staff room. Gloria then says “you just can’t trust these types of people and what they hide under their clothing”. You finish your lunch and go back to the classroom.
