Case Study 1: Kylie
Kylie is a 36-year-old Aboriginal woman who was sexually abused in the foster home over a period of eight years (from age 4 to 12). She was not given any support at the time, as her foster mother did not believe Kylie’s only disclosure, made at age 11. Kylie moved out of her foster home when she turned 15 and has not had contact with either of her foster parents since she left home. She has never sought therapy or any other form of assistance to cope with the trauma of the abuse, preferring to ignore it. She is married and has two young daughters (aged one year and five years). Kylie is not working outside the home although she often dreams about going back to school for further study and one day working in childcare. Over the past 12 months, Kylie has begun having nightmares about the abuse, is drinking excessive amounts of alcohol every day and has become increasingly concerned that her children will be abused and that she will not be aware of it. She has also been taking more and more sleeping pills in an attempt to avoid the nightmares. She knows that she is becoming increasingly protective and anxious, and has begun to isolate herself from her husband, who is aware of her past and has suggested counselling. Kylie has approached the local Aboriginal Support Worker at the Centre for an initial intake interview. She has been referred to you for more ongoing case work. It has taken all of her courage to come to the centre as she is reluctant to even mention the abuse to a stranger as the only other person with whom she has spoken about this is her husband.

 

Task
Complete a 20-minute assessment interview with one client assigned to you. This client will be provided by your teacher and will play the part of one of your clients: Kylie, Aaron or Maria. This will be conducted in a one on one environment to replicate industry work practice. The clients will be actors who will take on the role and respond to you as a client. (You will be working in groups of three, each student will need to conduct an interview with a different client which enables each student to observe all three clients’ being interviewed. For the purpose of this assessment actors will be employed to take the role of the client.
