Task 2: Case study John

John is 62 years old with a mild intellectual disability, and is currently staying in assisted living. He has always been quite independent and still enjoys cooking for himself. John has been very fit most his life, always being involved in sports, and now enjoys walks, bowls and the occasional game of backyard cricket. John is very close to his younger sister and niece, whom have offered their support.

Recently John has undergone surgery for his knee and has been advised by his doctors and occupational therapist he should try some exercises in the water to strengthen the area and assist his recovery. John has been advised by the doctor he should expect a recovery time of 12 months to regain his previous strength and ability.

Although John would like to regain his previous strength and ability, he is hesitant to get into the water as he cannot swim. John also has bad asthma which can flare up in heavily chlorinated pools.
John would like to learn to swim in order to complete the exercises recommended and regain the strength and ability of his knee. His niece lives close by and has offered to help him travel to and from three days a week. His NDIA planner has advised that he will have funding to cover his lessons.

John has decided he would also like to gain more independence in this activity and has set himself a longer-term goal of swimming alone for 20min 5 times a week within 18 months
