Overview

The objective of this assessment is to assess your knowledge as would be required to function independently and to plan and undertake community work and associated services.

Part

1: Research Project

Research a social or cultural issue that relates to ONE of the target groups below.

You are to write report that responds to the questions provided below.

You need to reference throughout and must provide a list of references to support the responses in your report. 

• Refugees and asylum seekers.
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
• Disability rights.
• Family and domestic violence.
• Consider the following co-existing issues within your selected group.
• Drug users
• Mental illness
• Trauma

Once you have selected a topic, write your report using the questions below. Please use the template provided at the end of the questions. Make sure though, you include a proper introduction & conclusion regarding your group/topic.

1. What are the social institutions that relate to this group? What have been the impacts of these institutions on this group? 

2. What is this group’s experience of social and cultural impacts within society?

3. Describe how their values, behaviours or preferences might affect the following: the community, their sense of self and their family (in other words how are the community, themselves and their family affected by the issue?)

4. Describe the experience of inequality for that group. 

5. What types of social stigma, stereotypes or cultural generalisations have been formed about this group?

6. Based on your selected group, describe their relationship with the following issues:

7. What are the needs and priorities of this group?

8. Provide three examples of support services available for this group.

9. For each service, explain what they do.
