You are a male worker at a community center in a small town. A family has just settled in the area, having sought asylum from their non-English speaking country of origin. The mother and daughter from the family have been referred to your service for information on local services, including recommendations on health care providers. The mother appears very uncomfortable interacting with you and avoids eye contact

I will do some basic research about the person’s culture first. There are many websites to understand cultural diversity and to learn about my client’s culture. We need to be careful not to put everyone from the same cultural background into one group and assume that one approach is best for all. Therefore we need to use community profiles with caution as they may lead to stereotyping. It is important to identify culturally and linguistically diverse communities in my catchment area when planning and promoting services. I can also use an interpreter. Some Asians may not make eye contact while talking to you. This can be misconstrued as being rude or that the person cannot be trusted. I will be aware of the client’s communication style. And explain what I am doing and speak clearly in a normal tone of voice. I will provide information in an easy to follow the sequence and make use of short open questions. It must be important to be patient and empathic as well.  If still, the client feels uncomfortable with me I will consider contacting the community center I work and explain the situation. They might give other good suggestions and change to the female worker if it makes the client feel comfortable.
