7. Describe one cultural view and/or bias you may have and why you think you have this opinion.
For example: I am a white middle aged Anglo-Greek Australian. I was raised by war time parents, who came from a Greek-cypriot background raised in Cyprus. The background that they were raised in was one of scarcity and poverty related to the war between Cyprus and Turkey. As a result of this background, I am financially very frugal. I am aware of these influences and consciously manage them as appropriate so that they do not impact on my work.

Worker might not recognise the other person’s needs, might misinterpret body language, might not recognise discrimination, not understand where the person is coming from, or recognise what they have been through, communication could break down completely.

Ways to improve self and social awareness include: undertake reflective professional supervision processes, research background information about a community group and their experiences, attend awareness programs or community events delivered by diverse communities, attend festivals, integrate activities with other work areas or communities and or attend formal education.
