Why is it Important to Understand Diversity when we are working with clients within the community services sector?

Avoid marginalising people

• Marginalisation is when groups or individuals are disadvantaged due to a lack of resources and opportunities to fully participate in society. Marginalised people can experience economic, social, health, employment and education disadvantage and often face discrimination.

• To ensure appropriate services are provided, personal information should be collected in an initial assessment and should include questions like:
• Which country were you born in?
• What is your first language?
• What is your religion?
• Do you have any food preferences?
• What are your beliefs about health and death?
• Use of pronoun e.g. Miss, Mr, Mrs, Ms, other
• However be prepared for some families or individuals to not answer some of these questions in an initial interview due to cultural or personal beliefs.

Sarita is training to complete her Certificate IV in School Age Education and Care. Sarita speaks and understands English clearly, but is not able to read English well.

• need a translator or interpreter if they don't speak English
• need an Auslan interpreter if they are a deaf person

For example: I am a white middle aged Anglo-Greek Australian. I was raised by war time parents, who came from a Greek-cypriot background raised in Cyprus. The background that they were raised in was one of scarcity and poverty related to the war between Cyprus and Turkey. As a result of this background, I am financially very frugal. I am aware of these influences and consciously manage them as appropriate so that they do not impact on my work.
